Gays are sorta like seals . . .

I love animals because, as a gay man, I relate to them. They're often misunderstood and mistreated by society. Every time I think about an animal caged in a zoo or forced to perform tricks at a circus, I think of all the gay people trapped inside themselves and the many who feel forced to "perform" for the world as something other than who they truly are. That's why I think it's important to be a voice for animals, because like our community for so long, their needs have gone unheard.

The Canadian seal hunt is a barbaric and embarrassing stain on Canada's legacy. A hugely controversial event where thousands of baby and adult seals are beaten to death by clubs, it is an outdated tradition that is viewed as a disgrace by most countries around the world. Recently Russia, the biggest buyer of seal skins, has closed their border to the pelts, threatening the future of the once-lucrative industry. Last year's seal hunt grossed only $1 million. A member of Canada's Parliament recently said:

"Part of our history is also whaling, for example, and the day came when the whaling industry stopped. Now, is that day coming for the seal hunt? It just may be. We cannot hide behind the debate and pretend the market for seals is not in trouble. Facing this reality head-on is the only way to address the situation."

If you want to help make the seal hunt history, sign the petition. Quick and easy.

If we don't support the voiceless, why do we deserve to be heard?

Why is the Gay media giving people like this space? Go back to your PETA cult meeting and continue to boycott AIDs research. That what people like you do. This is a gay site, not to be infested by group writing tricky and misleading articles with Gay intros to hook readers into your Vegan support group propaganda. Xtra should know better and not let its cred be compromised like this.

I have never boycotted AIDS research. Please abstain from misrepresenting me and my beliefs.

This is not vegan propaganda, simply an article about how I feel gays and animals are connected - a view which is perfectly pertinent.

While you are on the topic of misrepresenting, please get your facts correct about the seal hunt. Seals are not"clubbed to death" as you assert and those who participate are trying to feed their families by supplementing their incomes. In this entire debate in this country, sadly it is the sealers who have not had a voice as the highly funded groups such as PETA spread false information in order to further rake in the dollars - the photo that accompanies this article clearly illustrates this misrepresentation. And before anyone labels me as one. I want to state categorically that I do not support cruelty to animals and am glad that we are learning to treat animals better. That being said, seals are wild animals, not pets, and I suspect that the sealer has a much more realistic viewpoint about the lives of seals than the writer of this article. Man has become the primary predator against seals and if we remove ourselves from this role, we risk a population explosion of the seals which will very negatively affect them.

Seals are killed with a hakapik, which is a club.

The picture I posted is taken from the Canadian seal hunt. It is not photo shopped, so how could it be a misrepresentation?

The "population explosion" of seals if we don't hunt them is bullshit. Seals have many natural predators.

If you don't support cruelty to animals, you do not support the seal hunt. The fact that seals are not a pet is irrelevant.

Why would you suspect the sealer has a more realistic view about the lives of seals than me? If anything, their reality is compromised, because unlike me, they are financially involved.

Do the seals hate each other and constantly seek new ways to dehumanize and abandon one another? The prior comments are just one example of how gay men don't give a flying fuck about what happens to other gay men, as long as each individual gay man makes it clear that he is better than all other gay men, they aren't worth talking to or getting to know; gay men are all submissive, ugly and a waste of time, so instead those who are 'too good' for other gay people spend their lives chasing straight college students or jerking off to straight models desperate for money who wind up in gay porn.

I think I'd rather hang out with the seals any day. Gay people clearly are our worst enemy who live to demonize the rest of us...forget about the Christian Right, gay men have this obsession with 'you don't speak for my experience!' or 'you're wrong about blah, blah, and blah; you're stupid, your column is a waste of space'. Why do we insist on being so rude to each other? I know of no other minority group who comes out swinging at each other for no real reason - except perhaps the fact that we hate each other so much that the only remedy is to make sure others know that 'we aren't like the bad gay people who can't conform'...which brings me to another irony...if coming out is a statement of liberation and an end to lying and dishonesty, then why is it that, in most large gay populated cities, do we end up coming out to a community who expects you to look a certain way, have a lot of money, own a very high-end condo and car, wear $600 sweaters, etc., or don't bother talking to them? I would think a lot of closeted men would see that and say to themselves 'there is no way I'm coming out if this group of men is the pile of shit I'm coming out to'. Most have cut their losses and have no interest in having anything to do with other gay people, if that means no sex life, then so be it. It's too bad that we have so much contempt for each other that our only 'pride' now is self-serving, and to show for it, we hide at home in chat rooms rather than get out and deal with real gay people.
