The gay future of rap

Openly gay NYC rapper Le1f is redefining the genre with the video for his single "Wut."

“I am gay, and I’m proud to be called a gay rapper, but it’s not gay rap," Le1f says. "That’s not a genre. My goal is always to make songs that a gay dude or a straight dude can listen to and just think, this dude has swag. I get guys the way straight rappers get girls. I’m not preachy. The best thing a song can be called is good."

Not only is "Wut" good, but it's quickly garnering attention -- for better and worse. Gossip site Bossip posted the video with the headline "See what Frank Ocean started?" But something tells me Le1f is too busy strutting in his Daisy Dukes to really give a damn . . .

Queer Bash: Pride Farewell giveaway winner!

The winner of Blitz & Shitz's Queer Bash: Pride Farewell two-ticket giveaway (valued at $40) is Matt Bzdel, for his hilariously original and inspired obituary. Check it out (below), and I hope to see you all Sunday, July 31 at The Cobalt for the last Queer Bash. I'm already drinking my tears!

It is with utmost sorrow that we announce the passing of Miss QB, paragon of parties, diva of debauch. She was drunkenly riding her bicycle home when her feather boa got caught in the chain, sending her soaring through the air, shiny as a shooting star, right into a speeding car. Lying on the road, she reflected upon her life: flocks of fairies prancing, sexy sultry swaggers, nights of endless dancing, tummies full of Jäger, endless ass-squeezes and contracted diseases. Threesomes, foursomes, pour some more, son, 'til sunrise and then some. And thus, with no regrets, Miss QB shuts her shimmering eyes, dead upon the road. Her empire ends under empyrean. Now where ought all the 'mos to go?

William and Kate urged to take a stand for gay rights ahead of royal wedding

Gay activist Peter Tatchell and a group of human-rights campaigners stood outside of Buckingham Palace waving pink Union Jack flags and a giant wedding card featuring Prince William and his soon-to-be princess “expressing their support of gay marriage.” The demonstration was part of the Equal Love campaign, which aims to overturn the ban on same-sex civil marriages and heterosexual civil partnerships in the UK.

Asked why he was protesting, Peter’s answer was simple: “Kate and William are lucky - they can get married. Gay couples can’t.”

Although William and Catherine (Kate, if you’re nasty?) would be influential supporters for gay rights, I’m not sure how much political pull the royal family has these days.

But just imagine a gay royal wedding! Er, not that a $34 million budget, $800,000 worth of flowers, 5,000 bells ringing in celebration, an estimated 5,500 UK street parties and Elton John on the guest list could be any more flaming.

The Graduate seduces in Arts Club Theatre stage adaptation

I loved this play! It was well paced, well written and well acted. Perhaps I enjoyed it so much in part because I went to the theatre with no expectation, having never read the famous 1963 book or seen more than a YouTube clip of the 1967 screen adaptation starring Dustin Hoffman. I was quickly laughing out loud, and not just because I was as drunk as Mrs Robinson in a teenaged boy's bedroom.

The dialogue was charming and witty, and the stage and costumes were both beautiful. Camille Mitchell played Mrs Robinson to hilarious perfection and was more of a cougar than Madonna in a Brazilian nursery modelling agency.

If you’re looking for a night out that doesn’t involve yet another drag queen lip-synching to Florence + The Machine, I highly recommend checking out The Graduate, playing at the Granville Island Stage until May 14.

Lil B names new record I'm Gay and receives death threats

Move over 'Nye, there's a new gay idol in rap music, and it's not just because he has freakishly good taste in clothes.

Lil B, born Brandon McCartney, is the most progressive rapper... ever. The talented 23-year-old, who has recorded more than 1,500 songs since last July (and started several MySpace pages to share them all), has announced that his upcoming album will be titled I'm Gay.

The rapper explained to MTV, "I'm very gay, but I love women. I'm not attracted to men in any way. I've never been attracted to a man in my life. But yes, I am gay. I'm so happy. I'm a gay, heterosexual male. I got major love for the gay and lesbian community, and I just want to push less separation and that's why I'm doing it."

He claims to have received death threats since making the announcement and has lost a large number of followers on Twitter, but he says he won't change the name. "A hundred years later people are going to thank me," he said, "because people are gonna be free."

Oh my God. I must marry sleep with this man.
