That Charlie David...

...is coming to town to promote his new book. Remember my interview with him? No? Well give it a read here. And come out and support Boy Midflight, which explores 19-year-old Ashley's struggle to come to terms with his sexuality and his future. There's girls, there's boys and there's modeling. A truly lethal trio.

According to the press release:

Actor and writer Charlie David will be at Little Sister's Bookstore in Vancouver on Wednesday, January 27th from 7 to 8pm to celebrate the release of his new sexy novel, Boy Midflight.  Come listen to Charlie as he reads some of his personal favourite passages from the book. The meet and greet session will last for one hour in which Charlie will sign any of his DVDs and books for friends and fans including Dante's Cove, his travel series Bump, and the films Mulligans, A Four Letter Word, Kiss the Bride.

The cover of Charlie's new book features the winners of the 2009 Gay Top Model Cover Award: Joel and Reece.

In addition, you can get a sneak peak into Gay Top Model 2010 competition, as producer Terry Costa will announce the finalists that will create the show for this season. Charlie David will also talk about his new novel, Shadowlands (to be released Fall 2010) where one of the lucky Gay Top Model 2010 finalists will be selected as the cover boy.

Join us at 7pm on Wednesday, January 27th at Little Sister’s Bookstore, 1238 Davie Street in Vancouver.

Oh and I'll be introducing Charlie...so come down and say hi!

Wanna be on top?

Who doesn't?

The Terry Costa Experience is back, people! And he's bringing ROUND THREE of Vancouver's Next Gay Top Model back with him.

Are you ready to claw, scratch, bite and maim your way to number one? Last year, if I had been one of the contestants, I'm pretty sure I would have pushed one of my competitors in front of a bus...

...in the spirit of competing to win, of course, and not for some other spitefully petty reason I assure you.

Will I be invited back to judge? Or maybe even to...gasp...HOST? Who can say. Only time will tell.

Rumour has it that last year's winner (Calan Breckon) has managed to stick-handle his Gay Top Model notoreity into a role on a new paranormal series currently shooting in Vancouver. My congratulations to him!

And I encourage you all to apply. Here's the press release:

GAY TOP MODEL 2010

Be a part of the most amazing project. Vancouver's Next Gay Top Model team is now working for the third season of the event that raises funds for the charity Friends for Life. "It is fun, educational and life-turning for many of the men that enter the competition," says producer Terry Costa.

Auditions are January 17th but contestants that apply early get to learn all about the project and receive weekly tips and fun facts that will help throughout the process. "The team becomes a family working towards the same goal, an amazing project that is truly with a community spirit," adds Costa. "The theme for this season is sports and the contest official photographer, Nicholas Jang, is back to work his magic on this now popular challenge."

Contestants must be Canadian, 19+ males that identify as gay/bisexual. The contest is open to anyone living within the Metro Vancouver area that qualifies for the competition. On January 17th the finalists will be chosen. This short-listed group of model hopefuls will then go through a series of challenges, mostly to do with photo shoots, and prepare a live spectacle show for the grand finale of GAY TOP MODEL 2010 that will happen at Celebrities Nightclub on Thursday, April 1st, 2010.

Applying is very easy; all contestants need to do is send an email message to info@mirateca.com with contact details and a recent photo; no experience necessary.

All official details are available on the website www.gaytopmodel.com or look for GAY TOP MODEL 2010 on facebook.

Cocked & Loaded to tide you over?

Gotta be a tease. Just waiting on some photos for Abtastic this week. So for those of you who don't get Xtra West, here's my column that covered the Gay Top Model finale and a photo of me and the winner Calan Breckon (photo by Brandon Gaukel). And a shot of me entertaining the crowd at Celebrities, doing what I do best (photographer unknown).Yeah. I know. Pretty tragic. Apparently you can dress me up but can't take me anywhere.

Cocked & Loaded

Maybe I should blame it on a friend of mine asking if I’d be willing to be a promotional model for Sailor Jerry Rum.

Or maybe I’ve never been the same since Bad March ‘09 Date #3 whispered “prepare to be boarded” in my ear before leaning in for a kiss, tongue already snaking out of his mouth.

Most likely, it was seeing Lady Gaga perform on American Idol wearing a zippered eye patch and the accompanying “sick” that followed as phrases like to err is human, to arr is pirate completely hornswaggled my zero-brain-activity reality TV time.

Which brings me to my point. (And I’m sure you’re as surprised as I am that there actually is one.)

On my way to the Vancouver’s Next Gay Top Model 2009 finale the other night, I got to thinking: is pirate making a come back…AGAIN?

Judging by the contestants’ formal evening wear attire show and numerous on-stage underwear parties, I am happy to report that pirate did not make a comeback at Celebrities Nightclub on April 2 for the last event of VNGTM 2009.  However, I do feel obliged to point out that if I see any of you wearing puffy, frilly-fronted white shirts and/or buckled shoes, I will have to cut you in the face.

That’s pretty much a direct order from Karl Lagerfeld.

I’m sorry.

As for the finale itself, having not seen or attended any of last year’s events, I wasn’t sure what Terry Costa and the Mirateca gang were going to were going to deliver. Would there be sexy tickle fights? Would the organizers splurge on a chocolate fondue fountain? Would last year’s handsome AND charming winner Aaron Ursacki refuse to relinquish his crown and hit this year’s winner in the face with a red rose bouquet?

The answer to all those questions, to my immense disappointment, turned out to be no.

Sadly, no die-hard fans took the 80s rock concert approach and threw underwear at their favourite contestants either, though I believe the thought did cross my mind approximately 1.5 times over the course of the evening.

The good news: in its second year, Vancouver’s Gay Top Model event is still a knock out. Outside of WinterPRIDE, I can’t think of another locally-owned and locally-run event that attempts to showcase this community over such a long period of time - the first auditions were held at the beginning of January and teaser events have happened every couple weeks since then.

This year’s show also had some star draw – Toronto personality Mathieu Chantelois hosted and I’m happy to report that the ever-popular Charlie David redeemed himself in my eyes by bringing some much needed stage presence and celebrity power to the show.

Congratulations to Calan for winning this year’s competition and to all the other contestants who were willing to step out into the community spotlight.

Although my pina colada budget has been blown for the month, these should keep you busy over the next couple weeks:

Brit-Brit is in town WED APR 8 and a gaggle of clubs are hosting after parties. I have it on good authority from the saucy and delightful Raye Sunshine that Celebrities Nightclub’s Britney Spears Concert After Party & Showgirl Circus is not to be missed.

On SAT APR 18, drop by Rhizome Café for the Fist of the Spider Woman: Tales of Fear and Queer Desire launch. Some great authors will be reading new queer women’s horror erotica. Doors open at 7pm.

Make sure to check the listings in this edition closely – there are a lot of interesting parties coming this month.

Abtastic Week 12

Who came out to Top Model last night? Pretty big community turn out you guys...was great to see support for locally-made, locally-run entertainment. I'm going to write a full review for my print column coming out Wednesday, but here's one of my fav moments from the night, brought to you by the boys at Homorazzi:

Check out Syren starting at 3:01...fucking hilarious. Love it.

I had no photographer this week for the ab update, so these definitely have the amateur self-shot aspect to them. Have started taking two days off back to back instead of splitting them up over the course of a week and I think that's helping muscle gain and recovery. Here's what's up:
