Odyssey's Final Weekend

This is my farewell posting to the O. I know I've been talking about it all week long, but let's get real. I missed the Dufferin closing and I ain't missing this one.

Odyssey: you may have banned me once, but after Sunday you will never be able to ban me again. And for that, I'd like to say: thanks.

Seriously. Get your ass down to the Odyssey over the next three days and say your last words. I know they'll be back in a different locale in the not-so-distant future, but let's give her a sendoff worthy of all that she is.

Weekend Update - Odyssey Closing, Big Rogers, Apocalypstic

First things first: did anyone catch my other boyfriend, Janko Tipsarevic, beating the snot outta Andy Roddick last night at the US Open?

3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6, (7-4)... christ I love this guy's game, the tattoos, the weird on-court safety glasses. EVERYTHING!

In other news, it's Labour Day Long coming up and here are a couple events you should consider checking out.

1) The Final Boa Show - This is Joan-E's farewell to the Odyssey and the final night before its doors close. Do not miss this one.

2) UNITED ft DJ Eddie Martinez - Big Roger Events is holding their annual Labour Day mashup at Gorgomish. I'm a huge fan of Eddie. Obviously.

3) Apocalypstic - With the Odyssey closing, the Cobalt seems ready to step into the O's oversized, drag queen-sized shoes.

Tuesday Hotness - Miguel Iglesias (and more foreskin)

As yesterday's blog proves, foreskin really is a touchy subject. All six of my readers left comments, and apparently I am now part of some pro-uncut mafia. COOLAH!

Are you coming to Ryan Steele's show tonight at the Odyssey? You should. I haven't been in MONTHS and can't wait to see El Steele in all his comedic glory.

Guys with the last name Iglesias are just... you know. This Iglesias gives me more Hispanic Panic than Enrique. Yeah yeah, I know I've got a thing for Latin guys, but tattoos and longer hair and full frontals with foreskin = my new internet boyfriend. SALUD! Llamame por favor!

(Last photo is full frontal boys and girls so NSFW on that)

Isolde N. Barron - Entertainer of the Year

Every once in a while, I get to see a performance so amazing it makes me cry. Not because I'm sad, per se, but because it is so terrifyingly amazing that my body more or less freaks out and processes it in tears. Yes. I am a big girl's blouse. But I'm okay with it.

The Entertainer of the Year finals took place on Saturday, Jan 30th at The Odyssey and raised over $1,700 for Dogwood Monarch Society-supported charities. The calibre of talent was incredible, and Odyssey was actually packed at 8:30pm when the show kicked off. After nearly two years of covering events in Vancouver, I have to say that I was EXTREMELY impressed by both the turnout and the performances.

But there was one clear winner on Saturday, and that was my friend Isolde. Something magical happens when a real performer nails their performance (hence the tears). Backed by a nine-person choir, her gospel-revival drag number had me grinning like an idiot and stomping and clapping and praise-handing the entire time. She transcends drag, and the energy that ripped through the room while she was doing her thing... it was the same kind of feeling you get in an arena tour by your favourite pop star. This video doesn't do it justice, though I'm glad someone iPhoned it:

Congratulations, Isolde! Part of her prize is a residency at the O. Make sure you stop and see one of her shows. Prepare to be amazed.

And I think we have another star in the making. Mantra's opener for the night was definitely worthy of the runner-up position.

So...where do DJs get their music? Pinq.ca feature offers some answers...

That's a good question. And despite dating one for a couple months, I have no answers for you unfortunately. Despite trying to cajole sources out of my now ex, I ended up with very little aside from a newfound appreciation for vocal and circuit house.

I do, however, remember the time I would go to clubs and the music in the background was just a wash of sound. Having spent my late teens/early twenties listening to hip hop and reggae, no big surprise there. However times have changed and with that, I bring you a Pinq.ca feature that I am quickly falling in love with.

The Pinq Top 20 features a Billboard.com style hit list brought to you by the following DJs:

  • DJ Nick Bertossi (The World)
  • DJ Ryan Bazeley (Celebrities)
  • DJ MKW (Pulse, Lick)
  • DJ Zach Shore (Celebrities, Oasis)
  • DJ Betti Forde (Pulse, Flygirl Productions)
  • DJ Drew (Odyssey, Numbers)
  • DJ Del Stamp (Numbers), and
  • DJ Dan James (Celebrities).

And **gasp** they provide links to YouTube for originals and remixes. How awesome is that? Pinq.ca awesome. Love those gays!
