Gay of the day: Jesus Christ

Jesus being baptized by John. Painting by Harry Anderson.

"At that time, standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home."

John 19:25-27

"Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?"

John 21:20

Was Jesus Christ gay? Probably. Jesus was a Hebrew rabbi who was unmarried, which was very unusual. That he was romantically involved with Mary Magdalene has not been proven and is based on no historical or biblical evidence. There is, however, affirmation of Jesus's relationship with John, the only apostle, and the only man, to accompany him to his crucifixion. John was the only apostle Jesus "followed," they are often portrayed in art being physically intimate, and their bond was so strong that Jesus asked his mother to love John like her own son and for John to look after her like his own mother. He did not make this request for Mary Magdalene, his supposed lover. To me, this proves that Jesus's love for John went beyond friendship or brotherhood. It was the deepest love he knew.

Gay of the day: Michael Alig

Say what you will about legendary Club Kid Michael Alig; he defined the scene in New York in the '80s and '90s in a way that no one had before and in a way that no one has managed to top since his incarceration over the murder of fellow Club Kid Andre "Angel" Melendez.

Michael and Robert Riggs, aka Freeze, were charged for the murder, which was over a drug debt. Angel was killed from blunt-force trauma to the head by a hammer and for either being injected with Drano or being forced to swallow the toxic household cleaning product.

Angel was kept in a bathtub full of ice until he started to smell. Then Alig dismembered his body, put the pieces in a box, and dumped it in the Hudson River.

Then he started telling everyone about it.

"I know why I blabbed. I must have wanted to stop me," he told The Village Voice's Michael Musto, who was the first to report on Angel's murder. "I was spinning out of control. It's like the old saying: 'What do you have to do to get attention around here - kill somebody?'"

One of the most shameful aspects of this crime was the negligence of the NYPD, who weren't as interested in the murder of a gay Colombian drug dealer as they were in closing down club owner Peter Gatien because of the drugs, including Ecstasy, club-goers were accessing at his venues. It's been suggested the police were more interested in having Alig testify against Gatien, his former boss, than as a murder suspect.

The callousness of the crime was amplified when Alig left New York for a road trip with friends after the murder. He planned on living in Denver but didn't stay away for long. He soon returned to New York and attempted to revive his party career by throwing an event appropriately titled Honey Trap.

In 1997 Michael Alig and Robert Riggs were sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. Alig's release date is Nov 30, 2016. He has been denied parole three times. Many suspect this is due to his damaging portrayal in Party Monster, the film version of James St James's memoir Disco Bloodbath.

I can't help but admire Michael Alig. Or at least his legacy. I asked myself what that said about me, and I've come to the conclusion that all it says is that I like a great story. Michael certainly has one. He was a boy who wanted to be famous and define a generation. He was a boy who got what he asked for and not only made sure everyone knew it . . . but that they'd never forget.

Gay of the day: Aaron Hicklin

Out magazine recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and at the helm of the most successful gay magazine in North America is editor-in-chief Aaron Hicklin. Formerly an editor at Redbook, he has been leading Out since 2006.

Of course, his professional achievements are enough to make him The Gay of the Day, but it was his jawline that convinced me:

Gay of the day: Jobriath

Jobriath, rock's truest fairy, lived a short, excruciating and beautiful life. He became the first openly gay rock 'n' roll star in the early '70s and was one of the first famous people to die of AIDS, in 1983.

Born Bruce Campbell in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, after being conscripted into the military, he relocated to Los Angeles and renamed himself Jobriath Salisbury. His career started with a role playing Woolf in Aquarius Theater's production of Hair. He joined a band, Pigeon, which released one album through Decca Records. The group then disbanded, and Jobriath was arrested by military police. Following a breakdown, he spent six months in a military psychiatric hospital.

When major Hollywood manager Jerry Brandt heard Jobriath's demos, he tracked him down in Los Angeles, where he was living as a prostitute. After changing his name once again, this time to Jobriath Boone, Jobriath was signed to Elektra Records by Brandt and label president David Geffen. At the time, the $500,000 contract was the biggest in music history. Jobriath's album was built with intense marketing hype. Brandt was known for saying, "Elvis, the Beatles and Jobriath," and Elektra Records spent millions of dollars on publicity -- including a giant billboard in Times Square. Despite the heavy promotion and mostly positive reviews, Jobriath failed to sell commercially, and the blitz quickly faded.

By 1975, Jobriath had retired from the music industry. He tried to resume acting and spent his final years as a cabaret performer and prostitute. He lived in an apartment with a pyramid-topped rooftop at the legendary Chelsea Hotel in New York City until his death.

Jobriath AD, a documentary on the rock star's life and legacy, is screening at the upcoming Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Check out the trailer:

Gay of the day: Saint Sebastian

By II Sodoma

From Wikipedia:

Plausibly the earliest gay icon was Saint Sebastian, a Christian saint and martyr, whose strong and shirtless physique, symbolic arrow-pierced flesh, and rapturous look of pain combined have intrigued artists, both gay and straight, for centuries and began the first explicitly gay cult in the nineteenth century. Richard A Kaye, a journalist, wrote, "contemporary gay men have seen in Sebastian at once a stunning advertisement for homosexual desire (indeed, a homoerotic ideal) and a prototypical portrait of tortured closet case."

He was killed during Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians for converting Romans to Christianity. He was supposedly so powerful, he cured a woman of muteness following her conversion. He was killed in a field, bound to a stake and shot at.
