Vice-president Joe Biden supports gay marriage

I've always felt in my gut that if the Obama administration were to get a second term, the president would take a more proactive stance on gay marriage beyond saying that his views are "evolving." I believe that Vice-President Joe Biden's recent interview on Meet the Press is an indication of that.

I think it's Barack Obama's responsibility, as a black man, to his people and their history to defend gay rights. Gay marriage is a civil rights issue, which the African-American community should be able to relate to and sympathize with more than any other minority. It's shameful that so many choose to use their religion as an excuse to deprive all Americans of the same rights. President Obama supporting the gay struggle for equality would create an unprecedented wave of change amongst the black community and their views on homosexuality. I was living in Harlem, New York City, in 2008 when Obama was voted into office. Walking down 125th St, every step you could buy an Obama T-shirt, calendar, poster, flag, effigy, bobble-head, watch, painting . . . You name it. As if overnight, he became the most influential black man of the 21st century, and millions of people turn to him to know the difference between right and wrong. Let's hope that the man himself knows.

Joe Biden on whether his views on gay marriage have evolved:

I just think that the good news is that as more and more Americans come to understand what this is all about is a simple proposition: Who do you love? Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love? That’s what people are finding out is what all marriages at their root are about. Whether they’re marriages of lesbians or gay men or heterosexuals.

On whether he is comfortable with gay marriage:

I . . . look, I am vice-president of the United States of America. The president sets the policy. I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that.

Fred Karger: Republican presidential candidate for the gays

How have I never heard of Fred Karger before? I guess plotting Santorum's castration has been more time-consuming than I realized. Check out openly gay Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger's latest campaign ad. He's reinventing what it is to be a Republican by being even more liberal than many Democrats. He's pro-choice, supports gay marriage and wants us out of Afghanistan, like now. He'd have my support if his campaign vid didn't start with an "explicit content warning," since there's nothing more explicit than a few beach boys kissing . . .

Roseanne Barr's presidential platform: gay marriage and marijuana

Comedian/activist Roseanne Barr spoke to an assembly of about 75 Green Party supporters at Mayflower Club in North Hollywood on Friday, March 23. She insisted that her bid for the presidential nomination is no joke and said that her focus is on legalizing same-sex marriage, legalizing marijuana and forgiving student debt.

"I will not let the idiots go unanswered," she promised. Referring to her hit show Roseanne she said, "I created jobs by the hundreds, and I made some people there millionaires. I am the American dream, and I know the average American's problems and issues." She called the Republican candidates "Ponzi-scheming sociopaths" and urged that "it is time to point upward and hold their feet to the fire. An informed public is the enemy of tyranny and corruption. The days of holding our nose and voting for the lesser of two evils hasn't gotten us anywhere. What we have been sold is an unsustainable treadmill."

Her speech featured a few expletives, and she joked, "I do swear, and as long as I swear you know I haven't been bought by any corporation!" She added that her biggest asset is that she's not a politician: "One impeccable credential I have," she said, "is that I am not George W Bush."

Hai daddy! Maryland governor signs marriage equality bill

Silver fox Governor Martin O'Malley.

Oh, America. Land of the free and home of the brave, huh? If you think you're free, then you should come on over to Canada and check out how well we're doing treating our citizens with the equality and respect they deserve. If you're truly brave, then you will follow in the footsteps of Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, who today signed a marriage equality bill, hoping to make Maryland the eighth US state to legalize same-sex marriage. I know, I know. They're only at number eight? Hurry the fuck up, you turtles! Slow and steady may win the race, but why don't you speed things up a bit, since the race has been over this side of the border since 2005. You're dragging this shit on, and it's kind of embarrassing.

The Maryland bill won't go into effect until January 2013, but hate mongers are already hate mongering -- they're trying to get the 56,000 signatures needed to put the issue to a voter referendum, which is what happened in Maine, to the devastation of thousands of same-sex couples, their families and supporters.

If they get enough signatures, it'll come down to a public vote. The people will choose whether they believe everyone is entitled to basic human rights. It doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, old, young, white, black or blue. This affects you. If you vote to deprive people of their rights, those same rights could be taken from you. You get what you give, bitches!

No gay marriage? No straight marriage

Dallas County Judge Tonya Parker has announced that she will not be performing straight marriage ceremonies in her court because it is illegal for gay couples to marry in the state of Texas.

"I use it as my opportunity to give them a lesson about inequality in this state because I feel like I have to tell them why I'm turning them away," Parker told a meeting of Stonewall Democrats of Dallas. Her response to couples hoping that the openly gay judge will preside over their unions is, "I'm sorry. I don't perform marriage ceremonies because we are in a state that does not have marriage equality, and until it does, I am not going to partially apply the law to one group of people that doesn't apply to another group of people. It's kind of oxymoronic for me to perform ceremonies that can't be performed for me, so I'm not going to do it. I do not perform [marriages] because it is not an equal application of the law. Period."

This is similar to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie professing that they wouldn't get married until everyone in their country had that legal right. Brad has recently backtracked, however, saying, "We’d actually like to, and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.”

Although I certainly understand their kids' desire for their parents to be married, if they go back on their declaration, in a way, they're doing their family a disservice. It's a very powerful message to tell your kids, "We know you want us to get married. We want to get married, too. But we live in an unequal country, and until that changes, it isn't okay for us to be able to do something that other families don't have the same right to do."

I'm sure Brad and Angelina will do what they believe is best for their family, and we should all support whatever decision they make, but in my opinion, the lesson the kids will learn by not seeing their parents marry is more powerful than the joy they would feel if they did.
