My man of Movember

Are you groomed and ready for the Man of Movember gala at 1181 on Sanday, Nov 27? For those of us who can't grow a mustache (the twinks and those who don't have dinks), there will be stick-ons available ('staches, not dinks). Come dressed in your best "man drag" and support a good cause!

According to the official Movember website, the Man of Movember grows a mustache and becomes a "walking, talking billboard for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issues of men's health."

I believe a real man cares about not only his health and well-being, but the well-being of everything on this earth. A real man cares about humanity, our planet and the creatures that inhabit it.

My man is Matt Damon, who recently went to see a bullfight in Mexico. Photos of him in the crowd watching the barbarity sparked PETA outrage, but new reports reveal that Matt contacted the organization before they had a chance to contact him.

Here's what PETA's vice-president, Lisa Lang, had to say about the conversation: "Matt said that he went to the bullfight believing that bullfights should be stopped but felt that he should see the cruelty for himself while he was in Mexico. He said seeing with his own eyes what tormented animals go through only reinforced an already strong belief that bullfights should be relegated to the history books."

I might not like a man with a 'stache, but if he had convictions like Matt, I might just change my tune. Oh, who am I kidding. $300 dollars will probably change my tune a lot faster . . .

Q & A with Peter Breeze as he launches video for third single, 'Taxi'

He is unabashedly a bigger fame whore than a Tiger Woods mistress. Tonight at 1181, local pop phenom Peter Breeze premieres the video for the third single off his debut album, Send in the Robots. But first, the boy who proclaims over a wicked retro beat that he “doesn’t give a fuck” was kind enough to indulge Blitz & Shitz in a little Q & A.

Blitz & Shitz: Andy said everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. Gaga says everyone is already famous. What do you think of fame, and why do you want to be famous?

Peter Breeze: I’ve always thought of fame as something I could orchestrate and build. It never seemed like something that had to be given to me… especially once I got into nightlife. Andy and Gaga are essentially just commenting on the accessibility of fame, and I guess I am too. Andy said that you are famous, Gaga said that we are famous, and I’m saying that I’m famous. Fame is something that exists in me; I’m just bringing it to life.

B&S: There are so many components to being a singer and performer. What’s your favourite part of what you do?

PB: The process of taking an idea and giving it life. I’ve become a lot more confident in myself as an artist. I think in the beginning I thought of myself like everyone else did: a party boy who wanted to be famous. It was hard for me to give myself artistic credibility because it all started so superficially, but in retrospect, I can see that I put just as much energy into going out and building a reputation as I now do writing music and putting on a show. It doesn’t matter how art manifests itself, and I refuse to put boundaries on expressing who I am and what I feel.

B&S: The only mainstream gay pop acts are boy band has-beens or American Idol rejects. What’s it going to take for there to be an international gay pop star who's as influential and successful as some of the biggest straight performers?

PB: I really think it all comes down to being honest from the beginning. If you become incredibly successful and then come out, I think people feel cheated. You have to let them know who you are from the beginning if you want them to be with you all the way. A lot of artists wait for Rolling Stone to call them so they can come out in style. I don’t need my sexuality to be a milestone in my career; when Rolling Stone calls me, it's going to be because I’m the best at what I do, not because I like to suck cock.

B&S: What do you think of vaginas?

PB: I dunno. Ask my sister… she likes them a lot more than I do.

B&S: Let’s say iPods weren’t in alphabetical order. What two artists does Peter Breeze fit between and why?

PB: I’m gonna stroke my ego here and say Lady Gaga and Lindsay Lohan. I put on a good show, but everyone thinks I’m a mess.

B&S: What do you most appreciate about [producer] Maxwell Maxwell?

PB: Either the voicemails he leaves me or the food he makes for me. It’s no secret that Max is dripping with talent, and if you had asked me a year ago, I would probably have said that’s what I appreciated most. But honestly, he does this thing where he pretends to be Madonna on my voicemail, and it’s so fucking funny. He also finds the funniest shit on the internet, and at 5am, just when you think you are gonna pass out, he will keep you up until 10 laughing your ass off.

B&S: The video for your third single, "Taxi," is premiering tonight at 1181. What can we expect?

PB: Glamour. Lots and lots of glamour.

Take a listen to the Maxwell Maxwell-produced "Taxi" (below), and stop by 1181 tonight for the video premiere!

Hot Gay DJ Vancouver- Preview

Nine DJs. Five Davie St bars. Five charities supported by your buying a $10 pass. Bitch, please. If you are doing anything tonight, it's this:

Now this is the first part of a two-month competition that culminates in a Vancouver Pride weekend battle on August 2. Up for stakes: a two-year management contract, a cross-country promotional tour and the kind of exposure a newbie DJ famewhore could only dream of. This is another Terry Costa/Mirateca production (the boys who brought you Gay Top Model) so entertainment of some form or another is guaranteed.

Tonight, you find the nine contenders taking shifts at Oasis, 1181, Celebrities, J-Lounge and Score. You can find a complete schedule for who is playing here. If you want to do some homework before you go, you can find sample mixes from all nine DJs here.

I'm doing double duty this week and covering the event for Xtra Vancouver. I'm interviewing the nine candidates and they had until Friday to respond to me. As of last night, only six responded in time for me to write this blog, so as far as I'm concerned, here are the six to watch, in the order they got back to me:

DJ Marc Tattoo

Describe your sound in three words: "happy upbeat hiNRG"

Personal connection: None, though this guy sent me seven emails in two days. In three words: too many emails.

DJ Marty Funkhauser

Describe your sound in three words: "funk fuelled mayhem"

Personal connection: I've known this guy since I moved to Vancouver. Sure, he's a total piece of shit, but rumour has it he's going to be wearing the same silver lamé Elvis suit tonight that I once saw him in at Shambhala a few years ago. Oh yeah. He spins vinyl and is damn good at it. Excited to see him in a large venue.

DJ Jeffery Michael

Describe your sound in three words: "hard and dirty"

Personal connection: Celebrities Nightclub's wunderkind is a young risk taker and knows how to move an audience. You gotta appreciate that. He's also been subjected to a community-wide slanderous online campaign by someone desperate for attention, something I can personally relate to quite well.

DJ Christoker

Describe your sound in three words: "vocals baseline disco"

Personal connection: His preinterview was the funniest of the six. DJ-stylist, yes, DJ-deadbeat, totally...but I haven't met any DJ-comedians yet. Eh? EH?

DJ Lisa Delux

Describe your sound in three words: "multi-genred undeniable dancing"

Personal connection: DJ Delux has put in her time at venues across Vancouver and knows her way around a DJ booth. She's got name recognition and has the cred to deserve. Excited to have a chance to hear her do her shit.

DJ Mitchell Bederman

Describe your sound in three words: "dancy fancy unicorn"

Personal connection: I went on a weird date with this guy last year. When he told me he was in a rock-style band but produced electronic music and DJ'ed on the side, I instantly thought he fell into the I'm a photographer-DJ-promoter, "I'm-full-of-bullshit-and-wear-striped-tank-tops" category of gay guy. Whoopsie! It turns out he was serious!

Remember: with a $10 pass, you will be able to vote for your favourite DJ and won't have to wait in line at any of these venues (not that there are lineups at four of the five anyway). More importantly, you'll be supporting Friends for Life Society, HIM (Health Initiative for Men), Qmunity (BC’s Queer Resource Centre), Team Vancouver and the Vancouver Pride Society with your purchase, so get out and get judging.
