Martha Stewart's daughter cooks up a tell-all

I love Martha Stewart because she's rich and powerful and a total high-brow snob. Who could aspire to be anything more? The woman has a fortune worth almost a billion, works tirelessly and is beautiful at 70 years old, without looking as puffy as a Cabbage Patch Doll from too much Restylane.

Martha's only daughter, 46-year-old Alexis Stewart, has written a tell-all, Whateverland: Learning to Live Here. The book is full of stories about growing up in Martha's cold shadow and dishes on the sort of advice her hard-working mama gave her as a child. (The "marry the rich, ugly guy and sleep around with a hot stud" advice is particularly sage). Here are my favourite quotes from the book:

"Martha does everything better! You can't win!"

"If I didn't do something perfectly, I had to do it again... I grew up with a glue gun pointed at my head."

"Martha was not interested in being kid friendly."

"She used to make me wrap my own presents. She would hand me things right before Christmas and say, 'Now wrap these, but don't look inside.'"

"Mother always peed with the door open. I remember saying, 'You know, now I have friends over! You can't do that anymore! It’s gotta stop! My friends’ parents don’t do it! Give me a break here! I don’t feel like being embarrassed! It’s exhausting! I’m a kid! Stop!'"

"There was never anything to eat at my house. Other people had food. I had no food... There were ingredients but no prepared food of any kind."

"My mother has a sign on all of her doors to take your shoes off. For god's sake! My mother's dogs piss and shit on her rugs and she's telling people to take their shoes off?'

"My mother will occasionally complain that I don’t invite her over for dinner. But can you blame me? Because, sometimes this is what will happen: whatever I serve, she’ll sip it, taste it, make a face and push it away."

"A woman who lived near us when I was little had married someone very wealthy and very unattractive, and my mother actually told me when I was a small child, 'Now Alexis, if this ever happens, you make sure you have sex with somebody else to have their baby. Don't have his baby.' She was very practical about it. It was a survival skill -- you have someone rich and ugly who takes care of you, and you have someone who's hot and makes attractive babies."

"Martha always says she changes her sheets every day. But what she really means is that she has her sheets changed every day."

The numbers are in and better than ever

The National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago has released survey findings that show Americans are more accepting of homosexuality than ever before. The survey, which is done every second year, showed that for the first time in history the majority of Americans approve of same-sex marriage. Forty-six percent of Americans are pro gay-marriage versus 40 percent who are against it. That is a 35-percent increase since 1988, when only 11 percent of the American public supported same-sex unions.

The survey also showed that young people were much more supportive, with 70 percent of those under 30 years old in support of gay rights, compared to 27-percent approval from those over the age of 70.

Eighty-six percent of the American public believe gays have the right to speak in front of a public audience, and 84 percent agree they have a right to teach at colleges and universities.

The study showed that change in America's perception of homosexuality began in the '80s. In 1987, 75 percent of the American public thought that same-sex relations were "always wrong." That number has steadily decreased ever since, with 43 percent of the public still holding that view in 2010.

The US Census Bureau estimates that 131,279 same-sex American couples are married, with six states having legalized gay marriage and 39 states having specific bans against it.

Leisha Hailey kicked off Southwest Airlines for lesbian kiss

Former star of The L Word Leisha Hailey and her girlfriend were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight for their public display of affection. The couple were kissing when a flight attendant insisted they stop because Southwest is a "family" airline. The couple defended their right to smooch and were then escorted off the flight for "causing a disturbance."

I would be more worried if this story was about two gay guys. At least you know a lesbian has all the materials in her Kenneth Cole carry-on to build her own bloody plane!

Leisha isn't taking any bullshit and has fought back on Twitter:

I have been discriminated against by @SouthwestAir. Flt. attendant said that it was a 'family' airline and kissing was not ok.

Since when is showing affection toward someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers as 'family.' I know plenty of wonderful same-sex families I would like to introduce them to. Boycott @SouthwestAir if you are gay. They don't like us.

Southwest has also released a statement saying, "We received complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive. Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender. The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight."

So basically, Southwest is fucking crazy. Let's not forget this is the same airline that kicked Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong off a flight recently because his pants were "too low." What's next? "Excuse me, ma'am, your skin is just too black to fly with us. We are a family airline, after all..."

Paws up for Jamey Rodemeyer

In honour of the recent suicide of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer, some very touching little monsters have put together a video, reaching out to victims of bullying and those thinking of ending their lives while demanding the government make an anti-bullying law. I hope officials listen, because bullying is a hate crime, and it's taking too many lives.

Lady Gaga also gave a tribute to Jamey, dedicating her song "Hair" to him at the iHeart Radio Festival. She says it best: "Bullying is for losers." It's obvious she loves her fans. Since Jamey was a self-professed little monster, gave Gaga a shout-out on his It Gets Better YouTube video, and tweeted her a farewell before he killed himself, I'm sure this has been devastating for her. It's been devastating for a lot of people. I can only hope that Jamey's death marks the beginning of a change. We have the power to prevent the loss of anyone else. How can we start? The Purple Letter Campaign is a good place. We may not be able to change the world, but we can change British Columbia and hope that the world follows our lead.
