Northbound Leather celebrates 23 years of kink

Northbound Leather, the Toronto leather institution and one of the kink community's biggest supporters, is celebrating its 23rd anniversary with a BDSM birthday party. Encapsulating all things leather, rubber, uniform and drag, Northbound will host a fetish party this Saturday, Feb 2, at The Phoenix, at 410 Sherbourne St.

Northbound Leather, Canada’s 1st and largest leather/fetish retailer, was founded in 1987. It grew out of a family leather business that dates back to 1961 and established by the Giaouris family. It continues to manufacture all of its clothing in Canada, endorsing local design and manufacturing. Northbound was the 1st to bring leather and fetish to a larger audience, not only in straight night clubs, but also globally on the internet as it began 1 of the world’s 1st retail websites in 1994. Today the store outfits everyone from celebrities to stock brokers and club kids. The 1st Fetish Fashion Show was held in 1988 and now draws close to 3000 – 5000 people.

Tickets for the event can still be purchased for $20 at Northbound or from their website. If you want to spend a night getting your kink on with other equally twisted people, or want to celebrate one of Toronto's queer cornerstones, be sure to attend the event. Doors open at 9pm. Be sure to wear your best kink realness.

The winner of the first ever Toronto Puppy Contest is . . .

Today, as part of the Heart of the Flag Federation's Toronto Bound Weekend, the first ever Toronto Puppy Contest was held to crown the best leather puppy in Toronto. (Side note: If you have no idea what a leather puppy is and that last sentence was therefore gibberish to you, read this article by Scott Dagostino on puppy play. It's interesting! I swear!)

Anyway, three very diverse and very deserving leather pups competed for the title this year, and after an impressive showing from all of them, Pup Ego has been named the first ever Toronto Puppy. A big congratulations go to the two runners-up, Pup Digger (who won the Showmanship Award) and to Pup Ego. It was a hell of a show, and all three of them would have made excellent representatives of Toronto's leather community, but congratulations to Ego on a well-earned title.

Toronto Bound Weekend

Yes, we're in that weird little stretch of November where we're well past Remembrance Day, ignoring American Thanksgiving, pretending Christmas doesn't exist, and punching each other in the throat for Black Friday deals. (In all fairness: 10 percent off a Wii U? I would punch my uncle in the taint for savings like that! God bless capitalism!)

Well, to tide you over this most frigid and bleak of times, TLP's Toronto Bound Weekend has come again to warm up the pre-holiday season with kinky fun. The weekend offers a bunch of educational workshops as well as the first ever Toronto Puppy competition. Tomorrow's educational series takes place at the 519 Community Centre and includes:

  • 10-11am: Violet Wands, presented by Master Tony - ILS 2009
  • 11:30am-12:30pm: 50 Shades of Lacing, presented by Nick Elliott - IMBB 2012
  • 1-2pm: CBT, presented by Master Chuck's boy iain
  • 2:30-3:30pm: Single Tails for Beginners 1, presented by Victoria Windsor
  • 4-5pm: Single Tails for Beginners 2, presented by Victoria Windsor (The first Single Tails class is a prerequisite)
So if you're looking to brush up on your kink know-how, need a new hobby, or just need something to do on a Saturday, come down and learn a thing or two. All classes are $10 each, with three free classes to those with a VIP weekend pass. For more information, you can take a look at the TLP website.

Dream a little dream with Northbound Leather’s fashion show

Northbound Leather is known around the world for its signature blend of high-fashion leather pieces and BDSM fetish wear. The Toronto-based institution has been an integral part of the North American leather community for generations and is renowned for its annual fashion shows.

Northbound is currently preparing for the latest edition, named Dream, to be hosted at Sound Academy (11 Polson St) on Oct 13. Carolyn Kelly, the show’s producer, says the theme was inspired by the recent surge of BDSM elements in literature, film and music. “We are going to follow a fellow through the video clips who is inspired through books and literature to have wild, fantastic dreams and fantasies,” she says in a phone interview.

Over the years, the Northbound fashion shows have become notorious for pushing the boundaries of kink and fantasy. Last year’s show climaxed with a very live and very real onstage crucifixion, and in a previous year, it ended with an aerial ballet wherein the dancer was suspended in midair using piercings in her body.

This year’s show, however, will be a touch more subdued than previous iterations. Earlier this year, Johnny Giaouris, the son of Northbound Leather’s owner, George Giaouris, passed away in his sleep at the age of 21, after having successfully put together a drop-in fashion show in New York City.

“He had created a line called Code,” Kelly says. “Because his clothing was very young and fresh and urban – it had a very New York feel to it – he wanted it separate from the fetish world. So we’re going to open the show with his clothes in a very touching tribute to him.

“Following that, we will do the rest of the Northbound fetish fashion show,” she explains.

Along with Code, Northbound’s Dream will also look at fantasies and scenes from works of fiction, such as the dubiously popular bestselling book Fifty Shades of Grey, as well as John Norman’s science fiction series, World of Gor.

“I’m fond of the Gor fantasy line we have,” Kelly raves, when asked about her favourite pieces from the show. “Gor is a planet similar to Earth, but it has dominant men and submissive women. We have very fantasy-driven slave girls, very dominant warrior men outfits . . . Very Game of Thrones-type.”

Furthermore, Northbound is delving into the annals of gay erotic history with a line based on Tom of Finland, the artist that captured the quintessential image of powerful, über-masculine, homoeroticism. Kelly says they’ve collected 12 men who “look like they stepped out of the pages of a book.”

It’s fitting that the show is called Dream, as the show seems to focus on encouraging people not to let fear and uncertainty hold them back. This holds a much deeper meaning when you consider how Johnny Giaouris, in his unfortunately short time, managed to accomplish his dream of launching his own fashion line.

“What we hope for the general public to take away from this show is to not be afraid to open your eyes, and to read things, and to fantasize and to dream big.”

In case you missed it, here's Anne Hathaway as Catwoman

Because it's Friday night, I love leather, and this thing is guaranteed to pull in a couple page views from Google, let's go over the newly released image of Anne Hathaway in her Selena Kyle, aka Catwoman, costume from the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises.

All right, first, a few pros:

  • It's not Halle Berry's Catwoman. 'Nuff said.
  • It's a leather catsuit that looks sexy, practical and, this may just be an assumption, comfortable.
  • They kept the Catwoman goggles, although they do look a bit spruced up.
  • Looks sleek, stylish and sophisticated, which is a huge step up from Halle's shredded nightmare thing.
  • Did I mention it's not Halle Berry's costume? I feel like I should mention that again.
All right, a few downsides:
  • No protection. Seriously, Batman is a kung fu kajillionaire who's walking around in what amounts to a wearable tank and Selena Kyle gets... leather. I love leather to death, but it isn't exactly what I would call... bulletproof. All I'm saying is, if someone's going to be shooting at me, the least you can do is reinforce it with some Kevlar or something.
  • Not very "catty." As leatherwear, it's several kinds of kickass, but there isn't anything about this that makes me think of a cat.
  • Reminds me of that movie where Halle Berry ruined a perfectly good leather ensemble so she could fight bad guys with cleavage and cat-based puns.
All right, that's my two cents. What do you think?
