Goodhandy's becomes Club 120

For years, Goodhandy's has provided a space for trans women and other members of the queer community to gather together and get super massively plastered before hooking up in one of the upstairs rooms. Good times . . . Goooooooood times . . . Unfortunately, Goodhandy's is ending tonight. FOREVER.

Nah, I'm just fucking with you. Sorta. Goodhandy's is becoming Club 120 and will still be hosting nights for the queer community and all that other wonderful stuff. The grand opening party will take place tomorrow night at 120 Church St, and the party will be DJed (is that how you spell that? DJed? DJ'd? Whatever, you get the point) by DJ Sumation.

Toronto's newest danceclub launches Labour Day Weekend! Join DJ Sumation and check out the renovations and upgraded sound and light system at 120 Church Street (at Richmond). Doors at 10pm. $3.50 bar drinks before midnight. $7 cover before 11pm, $10 after, $5 students all night.

Rob Ford's niece apologizes for tweet telling rape victims not to dress like whores

What, you thought the Ford family crazy was reserved for Rob and Doug Ford? Nope! Turns out there's more of them waiting in the wings. Krista Ford, who's Rob Ford's niece, took to Twitter recently to tell women how to stay safe. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best advice.

“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore,” Ford wrote Wednesday evening, adding hashtags “#DontBeAVictim” and “#StreetSmart.”

She's since removed the tweet and posted this apology:

“I didn’t mean to cause such an alarm and I apologize if I did. I just want women to be safe.”

You know, the sad thing is she probably had some good intentions, but unfortunately . . . Well, I kind of get the feeling the message we should be sending isn't "women need to dress a certain way" so much as "DON'T RAPE PEOPLE." Or at the very least, "No means no."

In response to the tweet, comedian Alice Moran wrote an open letter to Krista and slut-shamers in general, and if you have a minute, give it a read because it's absolutely fantastic:

Dear a lot of people, but specifically Ms Krista Ford,

In advance I’d like to say I am sorry.

This is not the ideal situation to first acquaint oneself with someone and I am mortified. Sorry! However, under the circumstance, I feel like you owe me a moment of your time, even though we’ve never met.

The circumstance being you called me a whore.

I should clarify: I’m one of the victims of the recent string of sexual assaults in the Annex. ‘Sup? It’s nice to make your acquaintance.

So, you’ve called me a whore. Here we are. This is awkward now, isn’t it? You’re probably wondering if I’m going to challenge you on having been a member of Lingerie League. I’m not, because I’d never slut-shame another woman. I believe you have a right to your body and regardless of how you do or don’t dress it I believe you have a right to respect and personal security. I guess that’s the key difference in our thinking. You could wear a t-shirt that says “I’m literally asking for it” and I’d still advocate for your security.

That’s what I’m asking for this brief moment of your day, for your edification. You’re a woman and you should know that your body is yours and yours alone. No matter how you dress it, you have a right — an actual Charter of Rights and Freedom right — to not be sexually assaulted. You are entitled to life, liberty and the security of person. Welcome to Canada — you live here! If you weren’t aware of your Charter rights, other Canadian things you may have missed out on are double-doubles, good maple syrup, and Beachcombers*, so check that s--- out.

For the record, I was sexually assaulted while wearing a knee-length polka-dot dress. The last time I wore that dress, it was to Easter dinner at my Gran’s, where I’m fairly certain I could make little to no money whoring.

With due respect / sorry,

Alice Moran

RuPaul is getting her own comic

By now, RuPaul has become a fixture on this blog because the bitch is flawless and her show is more addictive than crack-flavoured Ben & Jerry's. (Is that a thing yet? No? Okay then.) So when I heard RuPaul was getting her own comic from BlueWater Comics, this was my reaction:

SUPER AWESOME.

RuPaul is getting her own installment in BlueWater's Female Force series, which documents strong women in pop culture. Or in this particular instance, strong drag queens.

"RuPaul is bigger-than-life and can hardly be contained in the pages of a traditional comic," said Bluewater president Darren G Davis. "That’s why we expanded this issue to 40 pages."

According to Davis, the decision to feature a male figure in the female-centric comic book stems from RuPaul’s refusal to be addressed as either. "He is comfortable in his own skin and is happy to let anyone within earshot know that. The fact he chooses his public persona to be female emphasizes that he stays true to his own concept of self. And that solidifies RuPaul as a female force."

And for those of you who say that RuPaul doesn't deserve a Female Force comic because she's a drag queen, they made one for Stephenie Meyer. As in, the lady who wrote those crappy Twilight books. Your argument is invalid.

The Bear Essentials

If you're looking for a movie date this weekend, and you're in the mood for something with a gay focus to it, BearCity 2: The Proposal premieres this Friday at the Carlton Cinema, and it boasts some pretty big names and a decent pedigree backing it!

Kathy Najimy plays den mother to the returning cast of bears, boys and cubs, for a Bear Week bachelor party in Provincetown ! Take a trip down the aisle with Roger (Gerald McCullouch) and Tyler (Joe Conti) to one of the most magical beach towns on earth in this romantic comedy for all.

Kevin Smith, Dan Choi, Frank DiCaro, Mike Ruiz and Varla Jean Merman, lend their support to our lovable gang as they navigate through a foam party, ex-boyfriends and 3,000 sexy men.

Meanwhile, Richard Riehle (Bridesmaids) as father of the groom, learns a whole new meaning to the word "Daddy!"

BearCity 2: The Proposal, the sequel to the award-winning breakout hit BearCity (2010) is a romp full of fur, fun and family as the bears realize that marriage is much more than just the freedom to say "I do."

The film opens on Friday, August 31st at Carlton Cinema in Toronto and stars Gerald McCullouch ("CSI"), Joe Conti (BearCity), Stephen Guarino ("Happy Endings"), Brian Keane (Urbania), Gregory Gunter ("The Onion News Network"), James Martinez ("Breaking Bad"),  Susan Mosher (The Wedding Planner),  Jason Stuart ("Entourage"), Richard Riehle (Bridesmaids) and Kathy Najimy (Sister Act).  The film is written and directed by Doug Langway (BearCity).

Well, it's always nice to see fully realized gay characters, rather than the neutered gay best friends or hapless gym bunnies. Plus, it's the Carlton Cinema. Seriously, tickets are like five bucks on Tuesday. FIVE BUCKS. That's not too shabby.

One Million Moms vs The New Normal

I'm entirely convinced that if you went into a darkened, candlelit room and said "gay" into a mirror three times, the leader of One Million Moms would pop out of the mirror and try to claw out your eyes. I haven't actually tested this out because I don't want to die, but still, I have anecdotal evidence! Sorta!

A couple days ago, I told you guys about how a TV station in Utah was refusing to air The New Normal, due to the fact that it is about a gay couple hiring a surrogate to carry their child. And if there's one thing One Million Moms hates more than their inability to understand how much "one million" is, it's non-traditional families, and any show that acknowledges their existence is an affront against god.

Cole proceeded to slam the show for "[continuing] to attack Christian values, conservative values, the traditional family...you cannot recreate the biological will." The criticism comes just days after a Mormon-owned NBC Utah affiliate announced it was yanking "The New Normal" from its fall lineup for its "explicit" and "offensive" content.

Still, Cole's remarks are hardly surprising. In 2011, One Million Moms condemned "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy for being an "open homosexual" and for "pushing political correctness and his lifestyle choice on teens" via his hit television series, Right Wing Watch reported. Defending his show as "a discussion of tolerance," Murphy has said, "Actually, if they watched it, I think they would like it." [via HuffPo]

Once again, if you're actually confident in who you are and what you believe in, what other people believe or who they are shouldn't threaten you. At all. And if your entire life revolves around what other people do, you may want to go over the choices that got you where you are and maybe reconsider a few things.
