Trans activist glitterbombs Dan Savage

BY ROB SALERNO - Gay sex-advice columnist and activist Dan Savage is back in the news again, but this time he's the target of a ridiculous act of psuedo-bullying rather than the perpetrator.

While giving a speech at the University of Oregon's Ford Alumni Center in Eugene, Oregon, someone claiming to be part of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee (DSWC) leapt through the audience and doused Savage with glitter while shouting "Dan Savage is a transphobe." A statement from the group, posted on indymedia reads:

Dan Savage is a transphobic and generally oppressive rich white cis gay man who came to Eugene, OR on Halloween weekend. The Dan Savage Welcoming Committee let him know that he can't be a douche with impunity. On November 1st, 2011, an operative of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee (DSWM) glitterbombed Dan while he was giving a Q&A at the University of Nike's Ford Alumni Center in Eugene, Oregon. During this session, the operative leapt to the stage and poured glitter over Dan's head as they shouted, "Dan Savage is a transphobe!" As they turned tail, they added, "Glitterbomb courtesy of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee," and just before they got out the door, "He's a racist and misogynist and a rape-apologist, too!" The operative then fled the scene.

The DSWC is a memberless organization, and the only point of unity is that we have a problem with Dan Savage for anti-oppressive reasons. We encourage others who share our sentiments to let him know exactly how they feel wherever he goes. He has a huge voice due to his fame; we have to be creative to get heard over the din.

Hmm . . . y'know, some people might say calling someone a douche is pretty misogynist, too.

The activists don't actually substantiate their accusations, but commenters on the incident have pointed to a number of columns Savage has written in the past where he's used the words "tranny" and "she-male" -- both words generally considered no-nos to trans people. There's also Savage's long-running joke about Washington State's attorney general being a female-to-male transsexual (he's not actually, and Savage's campaign against him is not actually funny). And some commenters at indymedia take offence at Savage's contention that a man who enjoys being fucked by women wearing strap-ons is still 100 percent straight because they feel that implies that FTM transsexuals aren't really men. (No, I call bullshit on that. There's a difference between a woman wearing a strap-on and a trans man who uses a strap-on for sex: one's a woman and the other's a trans man. At least keep your arguments internally consistent.)

It should also be pointed out that Savage has a weird history with derogatory names for the queer community -- this is a guy who started his career by asking people who wrote to him to address him with "Hey faggot." He always argued that he was trying to take away the power of that word to hurt. His use of the terms tranny and she-male should probably be read in that context.

Anyway, this is all pretty petty and immature. Savage was giving a Q&A, after all. Why not actually participate and challenge him with allegations of transphobia? That would probably accomplish a heck of a lot more than a confusing stunt that doesn't even indicate what you're so upset about.

In other news, today's best meme comes courtesy of Clint Eastwood, who's come out in favour of same-sex marriage. It's been going around on Twitter, preceded by "I'm Clint F---ing Eastwood, and this is what I have to say about gay marriage:"

You forgot to include alt text for the meme! Some folks use screen readers!

"He always argued that he was trying to take away the power of that word to hurt. His use of the terms "tranny" and "shemale" should probably be read in that context."

umm excuse me but Dan Savage is not a trans persons so this is not okay. This is not the same thing as when he is asking for people to call HIM a faggot. He has never been subject to the hurt of these terms so he should be respectful to those of us who have been and let us choose to reclaim them or let us avoid them.

On top of that, I for one was not a fan of Mr. Savage after, in at least one article, he wrote in recent years he used male pronouns for a trans woman.

I do not agree with the glitter bomb on him, and I agree a discussion is a better way to address the issues. But there are several things Mr. Savage has said or written that I don't think are okay and it's not fair to dismiss them saying akin to "oh he is just using insulting terms for your own good."

Hi Corinne,

Thanks for the reminder. That should be fixed now, but just in case, here's the quote:

"These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don't give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else. We're making a big deal out of things we shouldn't be making a big deal out of. They go on an on with all of this bullshit about 'sanctity.' Don't give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want."

I have had enough --too much-- of TRANNYS. “TRANS WOMYN” claim to have had a “SEX CHANGE” but their “femaleness” does not really exist. They don't have ovaries or eggs or uterus and often their breasts are fake. They still have a prostate gland. And every cell in their body still has male DNA. Their genitals have been reshaped by surgery to resemble a vagina. They could not even pretend to be female without a surgeon's scalpel, injections and lots of makeup. They are completely fake. Most of them still look like men --weird men in women's clothes, because their body proportions are still male. They make so much “auditory and visual noise” that people want to run away from them. I personally don't want to be represented by, nor associated with Trannys. LGB(T) is not for me. I wish Trannys would create their own association and then they can make all the noise they want to at each other. In case this upsets any “Politically Correct” Leftists: What I have written are just medical facts and my rights of personal belief and rights of expression. Leftists uphold the freedom of expression don't they?

I used to think so too.
But douching itself: (1)is a misogynistic practice, (2) is wasteful and unnecessary, (3) dries out a woman's natural lubrication. So "Douche" is the perfect feminist insult IMHO.

"Shemale" and "tranny" a "no-no in the trans community"? Oh please, it's a slur! Call it for what it is - transmisogyny. And never use them towards trans people!

And for substantiating claims - a quick youtube or google search of "Dan Savage transphobic" will let you find plenty examples of shitty things he's said.

Also Up here @GAY - woah hate speech on Xtra's website!

Gay's opinion is not “Hate Speech” it's more like “Fed-up Speech.” TRANS people are a whole new species, created one by one, totally in the laboratory by Cosmetic Surgeons. They are the LGBT answer to species dying due to climate change. But this fake new species has no interconnection with any other species on earth and can't reproduce itself, like genetically modified seedless fruit. They could not stay alive without regular injections of glowing green serum. And they turned out to be noisier than cats screetching in the alley under bedroom windows, the ones you would throw your shoes at to chase away.

Did you actually read the indymedia article before posting this one?

1) IMHO: A douche is a misogynist invention. Not a misogynist insult.

2) The objection to Dan Savage's "of course you're straight" response to his caller who was worried he wasn't actually straight due to his enjoyment of being fucked with strapons had nothing to do with FtM's. It was in response to the contrast of an article a few weeks before that one in which he told a man who liked watching pornography with trans women in it that there was no way he was straight as a result of it. Thus making it clear that he doesn't think of the trans women in said pornography as women.

3) His use of the two words that you then use in this article and attempt to justify isn't something that is an act of empowerment or reclamation since he doesn't occupy the identities that are targeted with those terms. Not gonna argue that he can't use the word faggot. But it's different when he's talking about other people.

First let me say I disagree with the whole glitter bombing crap. And why is it that some think Dan Savage is even worth the time of day? He's sure not a spokesperson for anything but his own ego.

@Journalista to follow that sad logic nor can, and this has been used over and over again by the anti gay anti equal marriage people. "marriage is for having children and they can't have children the normal way" Which of course would follow that not being able to reproduce would make homosexuality "like genetically modified seedless fruit" Of course that's ignorant nonsense said by unknowing and seemingly uneducatable people. So Journalista it appears you're in interesting company. People are born with transsexualism, just as they are born lesbian, bisexual, gay. One is not created as such though people born with transsexualism do need medical support to correct certain parts of their body, much like so many other people out there with other medical conditions.
I always smile when I see the same old, why are they... comments cause it reminds me of how little true history on the rights movement the lesbian and gay community owe to the out casts such as queens, butches and people born with transsexualism.

@GAY what is “femaleness”? Who decides who is female enough or male enough? Have you had your chromosomes checked?(I ask because a great deal of people walking around are living their life not knowing that their chromosomes don't match with how they understand themselves to be.) Chromosomes never tell the whole story but instead tell a part. I'm beginning to think that there should be required testing in order to post. I've thought that same about voting for some time now as it is.

@femme your observations are pure sophistry. In a court of law sleeeezy lawyers sow doubt into the jurors' minds, to win a case not by merit or facts, but to escape through the “beyond a shadow of doubt” idea.

Gay males and lesbians can and do reproduce themselves. Homosexuality runs in families. Those who have had a surgical, so called “sex change” have had their testes removed, cannot reproduce themselves. They are “seedless fruit” for real.

Giving men an orifice which resembles a vagina, through cosmetic surgery, is actually creating a new species, and goes way beyond what you call “medical support.”

Make-up, wigs and re-modelled genitals, do not make a man into a woman bcause all that is cosmetic and superficial. Boobs stuffed with silicone is as much a costume --on a female or male-- as male genitals surgically resculpted to resemble a vagina. So, women stuffed full of silicone or surgically re-modelled Trans people are all wearing costumes. They are all “Drag Queens.”

Only DNA change is real change, and we cannot do that yet.

Well Journalista thanks for considering me smart enough to be a lawyer. I don't consider them sleazy, least not the ones I know, though no doubt there are sleazy ones as there are sleazy people in every grouping.

Sorry here's where you loose, again. A gay man, with another gay man cannot reproduce. It's said that it will be possible for women to be able to do so in time without men though. Hope that helps your argument.

Most smart lawyers I know might well be called sleazy by the likes of you because that is your only seemly way to attack their arguments. I sat through alot of the equal marriage case, I'd be willing to be some of the opposition lawyers were thinking the same thing of those fighting for equal rights. After all how dare they come up with an argument that they could not over come.

Many people born with transsexualism, be they men born with or women born with have taken various steps, if they wish to have a biological connection with a child in the future. But still others adopt, like many other women or men do.
Never mind the thousands of infertile, for whatever reasons, people out there.(But i guess they too are a whole other species too since they can not reproduce or have a direct biological connection with their child) In fact come to think of it, the fault was always blamed on the woman and she was refereed to being barren.. I guess one could say that they would be considered seedless I know one such "seedless" person and what an amazing parent they are to their son.

As for women born with transsexualism being drag queens ( and I guess by your argument men born with transsexualism being drag kings), well once again you seem to adopt the "open mouth remove all doubt" philosophy.

And typically you avoid a question as if you never saw it. Have you had your own DNA testing done? For that matter have you had DNA testing done on all the people you know in order to confirm what you understand, and they themselves, them to be is so? As pointed out before many people out there only learn of mixed up DNA because of something which brought them to the doctor and through testing to rule out things they come across odd variations of their DNA. Not so long ago this very thing happened to someone in the armed forces. I'd point you to all the articles on this but I figure if you really want to educate yourself you can do that leg work. Because if you don't want that education then my doing that work for you would have been a waste of my time.

Keep that foot in and enjoy that life of bliss. You surely are a part of what's wrong with society

@femme Apart from what I have written, I also believe that every living being has a right to life, unhampered. I do NOT advocate harm to anyone, I merely point out that true “sex change” involves DNA. BTW, If you do eat meat, you are more dangerous than I am because you actually kill, or have someone else do it for you (coward). As for me, I will not even kill bugs on the sidewalk nor eat meat.

I only write what I see as physically evident, not some idealism: true “sex change” involves DNA. Anyone who has had their genitals remodelled to resemble a vagina and their breast stuffed with silicone, and they think they are female...their mirror lies to them. Unfortunately no one else sees them through the same mirror. Everyone else sees an incongruous being. They looked more real and acceptable in their original state. They should have been told that they were OK the way they were. They did not need surgery to be OK.

“Politically Correct” people spout idealisms which they think everyone “should” believe and repeat as holy mantra and attack anyone who doesn't spout their dogma.

Journalista

Well lets see. I don't live on a farm, don't hunt, nor do I have space to garden. Does that make someone lazy or a coward? Which are you then as I bet you don't make/grow your own food either?

So you don't bath( so many organisms live on the body), never take antibiotics , never slap mosquitoes or flies, never travel in an automobile (since bugs are killed all the time when automobiles hit them) and float through the air huh(cause no one can see every insect as so many are way to tiny). For that matter you must not ingest anything because plants are also alive never mind the micro organisms living on them

Journalista, people born with intersex conditions are what? Again there are a great deal of people living their lives without even knowing that they might not be xx or xy yet everything inside their being says that they must be cause that's how they see themselves as do others.

So again when was your DNA checked? And how many of your friends have had it done?

You know since I don't know how many big words you can understand, I have found something you can watch which puts the whole greater queer community into easy understanding language,(ya I know I said I wouldn't waste my time but really it took about a minute of my time, which I had available)
Myth & Science of Sexuality - Disordered or Just Different?
www.youtube.com/watch

I'm guessing that your big problem is that you are a frustrated person who is a closet cross dresser or someone who wanted to date someone born with transsexualism only to have them laugh at you about the very idea of wanting to be with you. (that must have hurt and no one should be laughed at)

One more thing. To follow the "politically correct" point, I say it's not ok for people to say, oh that's so gay. And I don't think that's being "politically correct" to say so either.

I'm done responding to you now because I suspect if you don't understand this after it's all laid out for you in plain easy to understand English, you never will.

Or maybe that hurt is just too deep to get past right now.
