YouTube project lets queer youth know that it gets better

Determined to reach out to queer youth who feel alone in the face of bullying and harassment, columnist Dan Savage started a YouTube campaign with a message: "It Gets Better."

Savage explains why he started the project

"Billy Lucas was just 15 when he hanged himself in a barn on his grandmother's property. He reportedly endured intense bullying at the hands of his classmates — classmates who called him a fag and told him to kill himself. His mother found his body.... I wish I could have talked to this kid for five minutes. I wish I could have told Billy that it gets better. I wish I could have told him that, however bad things were, however isolated and alone he was, it gets better."

Savage is encouraging queer adults to upload videos to YouTube and share their stories about how it gets better. Watch them all at the It Gets Better YouTube page. Here's Savage and his partner:

If you'd like to take part: record a video, upload it to your YouTube profile and email the YouTube URL to mail (at) savagelove.net.

Since the project's launch on Sept 23, the YouTube page now links to more than 300 videos.

Staff at Xtra's parent company, Pink Triangle Press, have created a video for the campaign. Watch below:

Unfortunately we live in a time and age where people have to be afraid for the choices they made. I think that is sad.

Yes it does feel good after but I think it still does nothing about the bullying and this is the root cause that we need to be fighting here. The Bullies still get away and they never pay for what they did. I think everyone is shocked by recent events in the United States in recent days but what he need to be fighting is the bullying

I think this will be a useful resource for GLBQ kids, but Dan Savage's attitudes and beliefs about trans people don't make me think that he should be billing this as trans-inclusive.

To put it mildly.

Can I get public relations in aisle four? Xtra publishes an editorial bashing EGALE for honouring TD president Ed Clark for his LGBT initiatives in the workplace. The same newspaper also publishes a smug article about the award, pointing out Clark's yearly earnings, suggesting that a grassroots activist should have been honoured instead of a person in power. Meanwhile, Xtra participates in this viral video campaign, circulating a camera into the workspaces of various staff members. I couldn't help but notice the white board behind Derek's desk, outlining what seems to be Xtra's aggressive approach to TD's fall advertising dollars. The It Gets Better campaign is important, and this comment is obviously off topic, but if Xtra wants to play far left, and bash our powerful allies, like TD's Ed Clark, in the process, it ought to take better steps to protect it's grassroots position, and limit what the public sees within the offices of its ad sales team. Go ahead - be hip n' radical and bash the queer-positive boys on Bay Street. But don't expect the public to believe you when you're posting videos that reveal how economically dependant you are on the same corporations you not blatantly, but smugly, criticize. Again, an important cause, but a poor execution on Xtra's part. (Also - you'd think at a media organization someone could mic and light the subjects? You can barely hear these folks!)

Nico, must Dan Savage eat your shit before you will be satisfied that his trans heresy has been adequately punished? As a gay male separatist, your insensitivity to Dan's campaign for gay children's suicide prevention because of your dogmatic fanaticism to transcentrism, is music to my ears. It will help more gay men see that trans issues have nothing to do with ours and the sooner we break all links the better. Gayphobic cis-hating, obnoxious and rude: our "ally" the T.

Gay separatist, since when does expressing reservations about this project equal a 'gayphobic' 'cis-hating- 'obnoxious' or 'rude' call for Dan Savage to be punished? Youth suicide in our communities is a serious issue, but does that mean that I shouldn't be allowed to express concerns about resources that might negatively impact trans kids?

Oh, and as a gay guy, the gay male community is just as much mine as yours. (You'd be surprised at how many trans men are part of it too, and they're not leaving either.)

Egale is working to document homophobic and transphobic bullying and doing something about it with the mygsa.ca campaign. But how many people showed up for the Egale Gala from activist circles in this town. Stand up or shut up. Shit on Egale for honouring Ed Clark but at least acknowledge we might not have Xtra without TD's advertizing. These suicides highlight what we already know school is hell for most queer kids and kids of queer parents. But what do we do as a community...tear the shit out of each other. Excellent role models.

Sick of bashing each other. ca

Nico, own your hate, Madame. And I have read that transmen are calling themselves gay these days -- many are having babies. And there are many bi men who are into vaginas out there to keep them filled and wet and pregnant. Fact: There is no "gay" male community -- the label was appropriated by transqueers so it is now meaningless. I should clarify, I am a cis homosexual separatist. Transvag is a lovely bi sex trip for those who enjoy poly gender/genital queerness but it has nothing to do with cis male with cis male reality. And even less to do with your hate on for Dan Savage and his campaign to save gay kids from suicide. Bigot.

Cis homosexual separatist, you seem to have separated yourself from reality. Or you could be trolling. Either way, I think you've proved my point, so thanks for playing.

ironic isn't it, that the same bullying these videos are trying to combat is happening right here on this page.

I am a Canadian woman working in a country called Oman. I decided if I was going to work and live in a Muslim country I would live there on my terms. I knew I couldn't live without dating, without loving, and without being me.

Every person I meet here I tell them, Yes, I am gay. At work I don't. I maintain that work is work. It is money and I never discuss any relationship or even friendship I have there. I keep it professional. But if asked. I answer. "That is private".

I never deny I am gay.

I have made a video blog, and basically it says. I am here, I am queer, come and kill me if you dare. I am not afraid of religious people who 'love' an imaginary god, over a human being. I am not afraid of bigots and homophobes.

Don't be afraid. LIVE.
