'He has a chauffeur!': Rick Mercer's epic Baird smackdown

If you didn't watch CBC's The National on Thursday night, you missed comedian Rick Mercer's amazing rant about government House leader John Baird.

Yesterday, Baird dismissed Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP leader Jack Layton as "Toronto elites" because of their support for the federal long-gun registry. (You may recall that in 2009, Baird told Toronto to "fuck off.")

The National ran a cheeky news report on the whole "Toronto elites" incident and brilliantly asked Mercer for comment.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to embed CBC news videos, so here's what Mercer had to say about Baird:

"He has a chauffeur! He's beating people up for being elite?"

and:

"You wanna know what elite is? It's John Baird in a tuxedo, going to the National Arts Centre with the prime minister's wife on his arm, complaining that the food is not good enough. That's John Baird right there in a nutshell."

>> Watch the segment at cbc.ca (fast forward to 2:10 min).

And with that, I leave you with this Rick Mercer Report classic, the "John Baird Home Alarm System":

Rick Mercer is not funny and is a really poor comedian...

He might not like Toronto's elites but I saw him at enough Church Street bars and patios this summer to assume he likes other things in Toronto.

I find John Baird refreshing, he can pull off the bombast. And please, non elites can wear tuxes and go to nice events too. Elites are urbanites who don't understand the rural mindset or way of life, that is not every sophisticated city person. So smarten up.

John Baird is an elitist snob only. He has no class what so ever, lacks any sophistication in tux or out, in limo or out, and will never be more than a screaming hillbilly.

When people don't have what it takes to travel comfortably in the circles they desire to be in they take on the snob role and in doing so become an elitist of the worst kind.

I just don't know what's wrong with being an elite? Just because you like to dress a certain way and attend art shows and drink sweet flavoured coffee and have grand visions for your country and society, then baby, sign me up.

Mercer is a Liberal hack. Didn't him and Bob Rae go skinny dipping a couple of years ago. You've got to be a Liberal to do that. What Baird said is absolutely TRUE. Truth is something Liberals have a hard time understanding.Oh, and Mercer isn't funny. If CBC didn't have the taxpayer to survive, Mercer would be unemployed. He's that good!

Baird, the closeted gay man who promotes a right wing Conservative Government, headed by an Evangelical Christian (Harper), which tried unsuccessfully, to veto equal marriage in December of 2006? Baird is like a Jewish Nazi.

Baird called out Ignatieff, Layton and Miller as elitists in Toronto.

It was wonderful to see the National rise to the defence of the Ignatieff and Layton.

Why do you think the ratings for the CBC -National are so low?

Big government, more taxes is being pushed back. Stay tuned.

Gay Leftists, like the commenter above, often insult gay Conservatives like John Baird by comparing them to "Jewish Nazis" or "traitors to the gay community". And, Xtra has an ongoing "hate-on" against John Baird. Yet, the same gay Leftists will march in Pride parades in support of homophobic Palestinian groups like Hamas. Those same gay Leftists (e.g., Xtra, QuAIA and their front organizations) have made it their priority this year to organize marches and campaigns against gay-friendly Israel, while totally ignoring Muslim countries that kill and persecute gays. It's really hypocritical. Unlike homophobic Muslim countries, Stephen Harper has never caused gay men to be whipped, beaten, imprisoned or executed.

Ha!! Good one, Rick. Very good; keeping up the tradition of skewering Canadian politicians, when they deserve it, as Baird definitely does.

John Baird 'GAY' I don't think the gay community would want him. I think there are pics of him in leather not sure if there real or not, but lets hope not.

The CBC - National has low rating is there crew. That panel they keep using how novel to have new ideas from the same old same old panel as soon as I see them I switch to CTV. CBC get new people some of these people need to retire. There should be alerts don't use any equipment it could be hazardous to your health.

Islam is not open to homosexuality its considered a insult to 'The god', it supports beating of wifes even instructing how and how often and child molestation children the Prophet too a 9 year old bride, it instructs how to and when to kill Jews and Christians or as the Koran calls them monkeys and apes, tells allot of the mentality of Islam as a whole, its totally okay to lie if it helps Islam. Its also the Christian right that think its okay to hate even kill gays. There views in some groups is equal and even worse that Islam.

ALong with al the ther closeted Conservative Tories- JOhn has incited much hate agsint people whom are gay.He may say he wouldn't and I trust PM Hrper would be fine with all those he is surrounded by- however merly by being someone who sttes gay marriage is not fair for straights makes gay out to be lesser and truthfully that is waht causes all hate crime- someone thinking they are bettere than someone else-
John Birdas an MP for Canada does not speak for me- and IM fine with that- let him and Rick and alolthe rest of the blabber s who jump onboard a cuase when it is politcally right go ahead- Illjsut keep being proud to be gay
