Evan Dean among Pride Toronto board candidates

Pride Toronto (PT) announced on September the names of those who will stand for election at its AGM. The list includes six new faces, plus two board members looking to take on more responsibility. PT has announced three vacancies on the board.

Last week, the Pride Coalition for Free Speech and Xtra held a public meeting for people who wanted to join the board. Four of the six applicants -- David Demchuk, Martin Kuplens-Ewart, Roy Mitchell and Mark Smith -- discussed a range of issues facing the organization, from deficits to free expression. A video of the meeting is available online.

PT's announcement, therefore, contained few surprises, other than two additional candidates -- Sebou Mirzayan and Evan Dean.

Dean is a former candidate for city council in gaybourhood-area Ward 27. During a June election debate, he told audiences that he thought PT had acted appropriately in censoring the term "Israeli apartheid."

“I support what Pride has done. You can’t ask an organization to put its own funding at risk,” Dean said at the time.

PT's AGM will be held Sept 23 at 6:30pm at the Church St School, 83 Alexander St (at Church).

The Pride announcement for the AGM says it will be at the Church street School, not 83 Alexander. The first sentence is a bit confusing, it sounds like the AGM is today Sept 16.

Thanks Tim. That was a nasty dangling modifier in the first sentence; I've altered it a bit to make it clearer. The AGM is indeed at the Church St School, located at 83 Alexander (at the corner of Church and Alexander.) Cheers.

As the coordinator that sat in on several of these interviews, I would like to highly recommend Francisco Alvarez. He's very clear about what we need to do as an organization, with a very clear commitment to communication with the community and being transparent as an organization. He's well established in this area already, but this seems to be his number one priority with Pride.

I had never met Francisco prior to the interview, but was very impressed at how he did. Especially compared with the other candidates that I interviewed for director positions. Mark is also a fine choice, but I really wish he would come on as a Programming Coordinator and help out TK.

But back to the point... Francisco for co-chair! As someone who sat and listened to him for 30 minutes... he's the missing piece of the puzzle for Pride!

"PT's announcement, therefore, contained few surprises, other than two additional candidates -- Sebou Mirzayan and Evan Dean."

Why is it such a surprise? Pride made it very clear that they hadn't chosen ANY candidates yet at the time of the public forum, so it shouldn't seem any surprise that not everyone who had interviewed would be there. Perhaps they are following the traditional route and waiting until they announce candidacy before they begin campaigning.
