Pride Toronto reverses ban on "Israeli apartheid"

Pride Toronto (PT) has reversed its May board resolution banning the term "Israeli apartheid" and will instead require all participants to sign and abide by the City of Toronto's non-discrimination policy.

Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) — the target of the ban — has declared a victory and congratulated the queer community for pushing PT to reverse its censorship decision.

"This is a victory for the Palestine solidarity movement, which has faced censorship and bullying tactics from the Israel lobby for far too long," said QuAIA member Tim McCaskell in the release.

PT's reversal follows outrage in Toronto's queer community, as many condemned the organization for its restrictions on free speech in the parade. Read all of Xtra's coverage of the issue here

Michael Went was one of the founders of the Pride Coalition for Free Speech, a group that formed in the wake of the announcement. They've been working around the clock to organize subversions and competing events since.

Those events included one that attracted 400 people and two others where angry queers marched on the PT offices.

An hour after PT sent out its late-afternoon press release, Went was sitting at a roundtable at a Latin America Pride Coalition for Free Speech meeting to discuss plans for Pride Week.

He was beaming.

"I'm feeling pretty good right now," says Went.

Brad Fraser, another member of the coalition, says the ban would not have been lifted had it not been for the popular revolt of queer people over the last month.

"It’s a tremendous victory for anyone who dared to speak out," says Fraser. "I don’t think anyone’s conscience would have turned them around on their own accord, least of all Kyle Rae."

On May 25, QuAIA members and free speech supporters protested at the PT offices. In response to the ban on "Israeli apartheid," both the grand marshal and honoured dyke rejected their appointments. On June 7, more than 20 former PT honorees returned their awards in protest.

Matthew Cutler was at that press conference, where he returned a youth award to PT. Like Went, he too hopes the community can begin healing.

"I don't know that there is an ability to apportion credit. I think we all played a role," says Cutler. "There were many weeks of people feeling as though they were voiceless, and that they weren't being listened to. With today's decision, it's pretty clear that we were being listened to."

This ends PT's second censorship battle this year. In March, PT announced it would vet signs through an "ethics committee," a move that was roundly condemned and was rescinded two weeks later.

Xtra tried to reach PT executive director Tracey Sandilands at her office, but she chose not to comment. A staff person promised that someone from PT would get in touch tomorrow (June 24).

Pride Toronto has announced that its recent resolution to restrict the use of certain language during the 2010 parade has been replaced by the requirement that each participating group read, sign and agree to abide by the City of Toronto’s Declaration of a Non-Discrimination Policy, and that all groups that uphold this policy are welcome to participate in the 2010 Pride parade.

During a meeting between members of the board of directors, the executive director and well-respected LGBT community leaders Pastor Brent Hawkes of the Metropolitan Community Church, human rights lawyer and Pride Lifetime Achievement award winner Doug Elliott, and 519 executive director Maura Lawless, the board unanimously voted in favour of a proposal presented by the three.

The proposal is two-fold: the purpose in the short term is to resolve the impasse that the organization has found itself in since moving to disallow the term ‘Israeli apartheid’ in the parade, based on complaints from community members and the assertion by the City of Toronto that the phrase contravenes various city policies. The decision caused widespread dissatisfaction in the queer community and allegations of censorship.

The first motion places the responsibility for determining a violation of city policy back in the hands of the city, as our review process has not established that violation. The second motion establishes a representative advisory panel of community leaders that will lead a broad-based community consultation process with diverse queer communities to recommend a set of strategic principles and a decision-making framework that will help shape future festivals.

“We are extremely grateful to the community leaders that took the time to work on this proposal and help us examine ways to resolve this impasse,” says Pride senior co-chair Genevieve D’Iorio. “The Board’s intention has always been to make the best decision possible to ensure the success of Pride, and we believe that this proposal is a really constructive way forward.”

“There are a large number of people that are sad at the way the community is currently torn over this issue,” says Pastor Brent Hawkes. “Pride has found itself in the middle of a difficult situation, and we felt it was time to step in and see how we could help.”

Doug Elliott agrees. Recently, during a keynote address at the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Pride Event, Elliott spoke out about the history of Pride and the way it has changed over the years. “It’s not always possible to meet everyone’s demands,” he says, noting that some of the demands Pride has experienced are ‘unrealistic.’" This solution upholds city policy without unfairly requiring Pride to interpret that policy regarding a controversial legal question. Hopefully this will allow a harmonious parade this year, while a consultative process unfolds to allow community members to have their say in a constructive way about the future rules for the parade and the ongoing relationship between Pride Toronto and the broader LGBTTIQQ2SA communities.”

In a recent press release The 519 called for public consultation and offered its support and resources to help find a resolution. Lawless stated, “This proposal reinforces how important it is that the diverse queer communities help shape the future of Pride, and I think the Board has shown great courage and foresight in committing to consultation and planning for the future.”

The two motions comprising the proposal are as follows:

That the board of directors approve the following resolutions:

1.   Be it resolved that the motion of May 21st regarding language restrictions of groups participating in the 2010 Pride parade be replaced by the requirement that each participating group read and sign and confirm to abide by the City of Toronto’s Declaration of a Non-Discrimination Policy and that all groups that uphold this policy are welcome to participate in the 2010 Pride Parade. Any groups that refuse to sign will not be permitted to participate.

2.   Be it resolved that Pride Toronto appoint a panel of LGBTTIQQ2SA leaders and friends to recommend a policy to protect and advance the qualities of Pride and ensure it is true to its core values and principles.  The mandate of the group would be to consult with the community  to develop recommendations to ensure a Pride that values and promotes freedom of speech and individual expression, inclusiveness and respect, pluralism and diversity, equity and fairness, celebration, humour and fun, and to make recommendations regarding Pride Toronto’s ongoing working relationship with the broader LGBTTIQQ2SA communities.

Over the coming days, parade participants will receive a copy of the city’s Anti-Discrimination Policy with a request to sign and return it ahead of the parade. Meanwhile, the team at Pride Toronto will be working hard to finalize arrangements for the 30th anniversary festival. We look forward to the community coming together to celebrate what Pride means to each individual member.

While the efforts of these three community leaders are laudable, I do not recall them participating in any of the many meetings recently held by and within the community on the issues arising from the ban. They essentially are acting on their own, and their proposal does little to address the issues of those of us who have gathered and expressed our distress and concern and have worked together to develop true community solutions to this situation. It certainly doesn't recognize the systemic and structural problems at Pride Toronto that allowed the 'Israeli apartheid' issue to arise, and it doesn't recognize that the Blockorama issue, the Trans participation issue, the Dyke March/events location issue, the larger sponsorship and funding issues and the by-law/mission/mandate/PR agency/strategic direction issues that are all intertwined.

As well, I can't see how the city is going to accept the declarations of individual groups stating that they'll adhere to the anti-discrimination policy, given that the city does not give its Pride Toronto funding to these groups--it gives the funding to Pride Toronto, and will expect Pride Toronto to 'police' the adherence to this policy (though it would have been helpful to have a ruling from the city indicating whether 'Israeli apartheid' does or does not contravene the policy).

So hurray--probably too little, probably too late, probably wrong people, probably wrong solution. But good luck!

MAn questions now--Why did they wait until now? (I suppose ti was pressure from Hawkes, Elliot and Lawless). What does the city anti-discrimination policy say-if anything--directly about QUAIA? I like the consultation with community leaders to keep to core Pride values--long overdue. Are they just trying to take the sting out of our organized protests (both internal and external to Pride Toronto) coming (or not?) in the next 10 days. And finally can QuAIA now march as such with their signs and their name?

This is amazing- a combination of community pressure- both from the Coalition for Free Speech and other leaders such as Lawless, Hawkes and Elliott - has helped Pride realize that the community will not be censored! There is still much work to do to make Pride more community-oriented, but this is the first step. Congrats to all the people who worked hard to make this happen!!!!

I've said it before and I will say it again. The Coalition For Free Screech lives in a fantasy world where you can take the money and tell the sponsors to piss off when they try to impose conditions on you. Hello....is there any place in the Universe where money comes without strings. Tell the City and the other sponsors to take their money and stick it where the sun don't shine, but please don't play the victim when the folks with the cash call the tune. It's unrealistic, boring and very bush league.

I think this is really laudable, and a victory for QuAIA and the Pride Committee for Free Speech. QuAIA and the Pride Board were at loggerheads, and bringing in three people who seemed in the middle allowed Pride to relent and reverse course with as much dignity as possible, and so why not?

the other issues that QuAIA has identified (e.g. the corporatization of pride) have to be dealt with, but it won't happen overnight. celebrate this victory for now, and after Pride 2010 festivities die down, get active and involved and reshape the group for the better.

Free speech and the community win. As they should.

How nice of Doug Elliot and Brent Hawkes to arrive on the scene at the last minute to propose solutions that many others, including QuAIA, had similarly proposed long before.

In the future, let's hope that Pride Toronto just ignores the Israel Lobby and its right-wing friends.

Judging by the text of Pride Toronto's announcement, though, there's another round of struggle on the horizon. It will be a battle to define Pride -- what's in, what's out.

In my view, the historical criteria should remain unchanged: (1) part or supportive of the LGBT community, and (2) law-abiding. Why tinker with what works, just because some people/groups don't like particular opinions?

But that's all for the future. In the meantime...

HAPPY PRIDE!!!

I know I'm gonna CELEBRATE! See you in the streets, beautiful people!

It will probably work as far as getting QuAIA in this year, but with the two mayoral front-runners opposed to QuAIA participation and the sponsors who signed on under the assumption QuAIA would not be allowed in, Pride will suffer a huge loss of funding next year, no matter what happens. Pride's indecisiveness has done serious damage to its credibility, no matter which side of this you're on.

Israel's apologists aligned themselves with a bunch of homophobes to come into our community and tell us how to organize our affairs. Instead, we organized on our own, stood up for ourselves*, pushed them back and pushed them out of our business. This is just one step in taking our community back but it's a damn good one and I am certainly proud of all of us today!

*why Pride never stood up for us (or even itself) is still beyond me.

Wonderful news! I think we should all take the time to email the board of Pride and thank them for reversing their decision. We also should now focus on mending the rifts in our community and we will need to gather the same sort of energy, organization and determination in the future to defend Pride Inc from potential funding cuts from the city. Its time to put aside our bitterness over this issue and to be ready to defend Pride Inc's decision to drop the censorship. They will be receiving much flak for doing so, its important now that we use the same energy fighting censorship into defending Pride. I also think that the planned protests against Pride Inc should be called off, I know many were looking forward to them since they were also community building events but I feel its important to focus now on the larger community and to avoid doing anything that might further antagonize supporters of censorship, we won, we don't need to rub their noses in it, doing so might feel good but we should be focused on the larger picture at this point. To be honest I didn't think they would stop the censorship and that it was going to be necessary to replace certain board members to do so. I know there are still other issues that remain unresolved but lets take a moment to celebrate and be grateful for winning this battle. I think everyone opposed contributed to this victory in their won way, whether through just sharing our point of view with others or those who did the heavy lifting of organizing the oppositon groups and protests, this is a victory for the whole community but we should acknowledge those who led the way and gave the community a voice, without their hard work and effort we would've just been talking to ourselves getting nothing accomplished. Its very good to know that community efforts can still make a difference in this world. Woo hoo!

I celebrate the suspension of censorship, with the realization that the banning of QUAIA was simply the last straw in a pattern of increasing conservatism and corporate branding at Pride. The QuiA ban woke us up from our slumber. Barricades, ginormous TD Bank floats, a tourism event that no longer serves our community but serves the city. The marginalization of Blockorama and of dykes. Turning what used to be a political demonstration into one huge beer garden. Pour me a drink! There's still a ways to go...

The third paragraph sums up this situation perfectly. It has nothing to do with Pride. WTF people!

Great news, the community should decide what our Pride means. The consulatations should be about the Queer commmunity , not the likes of mamoliti, and others who have never been friends of ours. This could have been resolved by pride this way after last year, instead of working behind the scenes with Kyle Rae to pretend to threaton the funding. The city needs to prove accusations not just asssume them to be true because Martin Gladestone says they are.

I think our Pride Coalition for Free Speech should still march in the parade. This could happen again if we are not vigilant as well as demonstrative & noisy about it when censorship is imposed or attempted.

Um, Chris, maybe you missed a key word in Tim's quotation? It was solidarity. Pretty simple concept. Think "unity in diversity" and "human rights for all," etc. Sample usage: As a queer in Canada, I stand in solidarity with queers in Palestine! And that has everything to do with Pride!

Great for free speech... but Pride's image will take a major hit this year.

Please explain the paradox of logic involved.

islam hangs gays, beats and covers women, promotes slavery, kills Apostates, excuses pedophilia, Queers don't even exist in Iran...

We as a society have tried to move past this sort of slavish adherence to ancient puritan code. islam has not allowed this sort of change ever.

What blows my mind and truly is the paradox is, how Queers can make common cause with an ideology that hates Queers so much, hanging is the specific punishment? It's insane.

One only needs to compare Israel's Charter with hamas's charter. Israel's Charter generally conforms with the rights we expect growing up with America. Hamas's charter is straight out of the qu'ran.

I don't understand how Queers can support the imposition of sharia onto non-muslims of any sort. I don't understand how Queers can be comfortable morally with forming a common cause with a societal system that is based completely on what muhammad would do.

www.youtube.com/watch

I'm sorry, but Israel doesn't put this on television...

When are moderate Queers going to speak out and point out the sheer hypocrisy?

Good Luck with the Parade. I'm sure it will be the most documented in history. I'll watch from youtube this year.

Van Grungy:
In fact, your logic is entirely faulty. QuAIA stands in solidarity with queers in Palestine and, therefore, against Israeli apartheid. That doesn't mean that QuAIA supports Hamas, fundamentalism, terrorism, homophobic violence, etc. QuAIA is opposed to hate and homophobia everywhere -- including within Israel and Palestine, and elsewhere. I likewise stand in solidarity with Ugandan queers; that doesn't mean I support Uganda's state violence and homophobia.

Rick can certainly stand in solidarity with queers wherever they may be, but *gosh* it's funny that no one is carrying banners protesting Iranian homophobia. Israel isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but *gosh* it's funny that we aren't blessed by QuAUDSFQ (Queers Against Ugandan Death Sentences for Queers) or QuAIWOCHNG (Queers Against Iran Which Of Course Has No Gays). Michael: Yes, it is great, isn't it? It's called freedom and, by golly, we live in a free country -- with free speech. QuAIA and its activist members oppose all forms of hate. They are involved in many different movements; so, don't be so presumptuous about what they do/don't protest. I, for example, support QuAIA. I also support many other groups and causes. Israeli apartheid is but one injustice that I choose to protest. And a key difference between Iran and Israel is that Iran doesn't try to pink-wash its human rights abuses. Pretty disgusting that Israel tries to mask its apartheid regime by promoting its gay-friendliness. Well, guess what? "The emperor has no clothes." Israel Lobby: Piss off!

Free speech? Censorship? This is about neither of those things. It’s about an organization deciding (and then undeciding) that some things are beyond the pale *for its event*. No one is censoring. No one was being prevented from speaking. No rights were being taken away -- because no one has a right to march in a particular parade.

Mark Wickens ca

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 11:40 PM

Mark - Quite so. It's also about the money. If Pride had not grown to the point where it relies on handouts from government and sponsors then this would be a non-issue, wouldn't it? It's really simple: say no thank you to the money and do what you want, or take the money and recognize that you have responsibilities attached to the dollars. But you can't have the money and the freedom to spend it with no regard to the wishes of the sponsors. Not so? And on that note I bid you all a good night.

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 11:41 PM

Once you get rid of the religious fanatics you'll see an end to "Israeli Apartheid." Why are you not holding Palestinian leaders accountable for allowing a segment of their population to anchor them to the dark ages?

Israel is deliberately trying to "pink-wash" their reputation? Are you saying that homosexuality would be punished by death otherwise?

So how many posters have actually lived there for any length of time? Just curious?

Van Grungy has it right. This is a hollow victory for folks who have been reading way too much Voltaire. The folks of islam don't like the gays and lesbians very much -- and has been said before, if you tried to conduct a Pride Parade in an islamic country all of the participants would "disappear." But go ahead radical queers, while the majority, the moderate gays and lesbians, shake their heads in disbelief that you're fighting for the rights of not a homophobic culutre, but for a homodeath culture.

What is most exciting about this debate has been the discussion it's generated about what Pride was, is, and could/should be. And yes, people, Pride can evolve! And no, we might not all agree.

I propose that we do away with 'spectators'. In the literal sense, I'm referring to the thousands and thousands watching the parade behind barricades, who are actually more interesting and significant than the parade itself. Rather than watching the show, let's become the show, straights and gays marching through the streets. Everyone.

More figuratively, I am tired of 'spectators' relying on Pride Toronto to deliver this and that. In the past few weeks, it was exciting to see alternative events begin popping up amidst all of the controversy. There is so much potential for (and fewer restrictions on) these independent, unofficial initiatives. If what you're looking for doesn't exist, do your best Will Munro and make it happen. It will be what you want it to be and people will show up.

Finally, let's reflect on how the words 'we' and 'us' and 'community' are being thrown around. Newsflash: We are a diverse bunch who are allowed to disagree with one another on things big and small, queer and not-so-queer. One recurring theme that I've found frustrating in Xtra articles and these forums is the notion that Pride Toronto is some sort of alien entity that appeared out of nowhere to steal Pride from 'us', the 'community'.

Pride Toronto is made up of hard-working people. These people are 'us' and part of our 'community' - even the South African woman who is in charge! Let's not forget (I'm looking at you, Xtra editors) that she was hired for this position; she didn't simply kill off her predecessor and seize control of the organization.

Someone write this down as a possible theme for next year's Pride: No Spectators.

Thursday, June 24, 2010 12:17 AM

Michael: To answer your question, we concentrate our struggle against Israel's apartheid because we here in Canada are complicit in it. We provide Israel immeasurable economic and diplomatic support... while our neighbor to the South (my national home btw) forks over billions of dollars of military support to a state that consistently uses that money to commit grave human rights violations, including possible crimes against humanity in Gaza in 2008/2009 (read the Goldstone report). America's military treaty with Israel also forces it to fork over billions of military aid dollars to Egypt, another human rights abuser. The fact that Israel is a self-described Jewish nation while Egypt is a majority Muslim nation makes no difference. The aid to both of those states should be canceled. And they are both complicit in the illegal and immoral siege on Gaza.

As for the issue of homophobia in Palestine. Well it's true, there is homophobia in Palestine and QuAIA condemns it. And you condemn it. And Obama condemns it... everyone condemns it. But ask yourself, how many queers have ever been set free by condemnations from foreign nations? Were American queers set free because China condemned homophobia in the U.S.? No, American queers rioted in Stonewall for their own rights. The same thing that happened here in Toronto with the bathhouse raids. Everywhere in the world it has always been the same story. The truth is we can condemn homophobia in Palestine or Iran until we are blue in the face but it does very little good because we are not _complicit_ in Iranian homophobia the same way that we are very very complicit in Israeli apartheid.

Consider the situation of activists in the West Bank... when they organize politically against Israel's policies they suffer restrictions in movement due to Israel's system of barriers and checkpoints... not to mention the closures and curfews. They have no freedom of assembly, they have no freedom of speech, they have no recourse to the legal system. They are always at risk of arbitrary detention (they can be detained indefinitely without ever facing charges).

Now imagine a queer Palestinian organizing against homophobia. When they organize politically against homophobia in Palestine or Israel they suffer restrictions in movement due to Israel's system of barriers, checkpoints, closures and curfews. They have no freedom of assembly, they have no freedom of speech, they have no recourse to the legal system. They are always at risk of arbitrary detention (they can be detained indefinitely without ever facing charges). They have the additional problem of facing Palestinian and Israeli homophobia. Did you really think they would be able to go up to an Israeli military guard and say "Hey! I'm one of the queer Palestinians... let me through I'm one of the good guys!" Of course not, it's ridiculous.

So the point is that while queer Palestinians face both Israel's occupation and Palestinian&Israeli trans/homophobia, here in Canada we are only complicit in one of these things: Israel's occupation and apartheid. The good thing is that gives us leverage over Israel... and we are morally obligated to use that leverage to pressure Israel to comply with International Law. We however have little to do with homophobia in Palestine... sure we can condemn it, but it is purely rhetorical. It doesn't really much to change the situation.

btw- If you want to hear the point of view of an actual queer Palestinian activist, attend QuAIA's upcoming events on the 28th and 29th of June.

1. I don't see how this is a victory for anybody, to be honest. Last time I checked, our Charter of Rights and Freedoms pretty much guarantees anybody can walk down the street carrying just about any sign they want to. To suggest that they can only do so if they sign some declaration promising not to piss people off doesn't sound much like free speech to me.

2. Yes, I totally agree that money comes with strings attached. Either we take the money, or we keep the rights. But if Pride is just an excuse for a big, sponsored street party, perhaps the name should be returned to the community and a new one chosen.

3. It's all well and good to say Iran and Palestinians and anybody we don't like are despicable to homosexuals. They are. But that's hardly an excuse to turn a blind eye to what Israel is doing in other areas. If we don't hold our friends to higher standards than our enemies, what good are we as people. This isn't who Israel wanted to be. If we don't stand up and remind them of that, we can't claim to be friends of theirs, either.

Yes, those of you who live in Canada live in a free country to the extent you are spoiled and naive. It is more free than the United States. Lets hope you never have that freedom threatened.

If politicians in the US stopped saying the word "freedom" for a split second, people might question the assertion.

Do you know why Canada is more free than the United States? It is simply because there are more religious fundamentalists in the US than in Canada.

Most US states don't allow same-sex marriage. Why? Because religious fundamentalists have political power. Some of our schools had to put stickers on science books warning "evolution is a theory not a fact" because religious fundamentalists wanted it that way. A nun and administrator of a Catholic hospital was recently excommunicated because she approved an abortion to prevent the death of a woman with pulmonary hypertension. Notice: female nun saves woman's life=excommunicated. male priest sexually abuses children=forgiven. Incidentally, had the woman died, the child would have too. Politicians that pander to their fundamentalist religious base want to control how women may donate their eggs, extend waiting periods for getting a divorce, extend waiting periods for abortions, put religious monuments in government buildings, have already forced nearly the entire country to teach abstinence only sex education and prevented the morning after pill's OTC status in spite of its proven safety.

Religious fundamentalism is a threat to freedom, human rights and economic stability. If you were surrounded by it you would fight to keep it as far away from you as possible.

What a load of crap! This was bound to happen and if QuAIA and a minority of over sensitive queers want to take the glory then fine, but PT was probably going to reverse their decision regardless. It's a political game and when ever there is government money attached, whether it be municipal, provincial or federal, it's going to come with strings. I don't particularly understand the way PT handled the situation, but make no mistake, politics played a key roll in the decisions. QuAIA helped with publicity for Pride and thats all. Let's all move on and enjoy the festivities...and as for all the Facebook group protest thingies, enough already! Quit with the self indulgent drama and focus on something that's worth the blood, sweat and tears...not whether you can march in a god damn parade!...and that's all I got to say about that Smile

There is no possible way to compare the domination of sharia with the choice of 50 different States.

I hope you don't side with the meccanecks when Europe goes pop. Even Geert Wilders is on the Queer side. Look it up.
This is a long term issue all non-muslims have with sharia. Whether you like it or not, there is a world of difference between Christianity and islam. I think you need to ask yourselves if sharia fits your 'left/right' political mold comfortably.

Take it from someone who knows what hamas is all about. Learn about the motives behind your purported fellow travelers.

I am passionate about this issue because I don't want to see regression here at home. 'Queer' rights have only existed for a very short time. Please consider your long term credibility when you make the parade into a protest.

I support the freedom of speech - and while I absolutly disagree 100% with the statements made by the QuAIA ( I am mean, seriously..." Israel apartheid."???....gosh folks, lets look up the correct meaning and or terms of big words before you blast them all over banners, the press etc, with your name attached and used totally out of context!! ) - I do not agree with the decision to censor the QuAIA. I do feel that Toronto Pride, as well as all Prides, need to be able to have a say in who is offically allowed into the Parade or not. I mean, for goodness sakes....we could end up with ' God hates fags! ' group wanting to march next...and complaining about censorship if not allowed. Pride is about building community for LGBTTQ folks and I don't see how the QuAIA group...has anything to do with that - except for some vauguely strung together ideas about Israel being ' anti gay for Palastine' which is crazy..as Israel is one of the only countries in the middle east which allows Pride parades and acknowledges and validates the reality of LGBTTQ folks in its country and culture. Soooooooooo....not sure who this was a victory for...and who this was a defeat for. What I do know is that a lot of bad blood was created over this issue..not only in TO but all over Canada. We need to try and heal this festering wound.....and I would love to hear what the QuAIA have to offer up as suggestions for that???

Sav. The difference is that those rioters were arrested. Legislation in 2008 to stop further gay pride parades in Israel was unsuccessful and there have been pride parades ever since.

That isn't to say that Israelis should let their guard down. It's just as important to prevent Jewish religious extremists having too much power.

I gotta say, Canadians must have a pretty low-stress life if the only thing they have to bitch about is not being able to say "Israeli Apartheid" during a gay pride parade. No matter how you twist it around, it really don't have that much to do with gay rights. In any case, they got what they wanted. I hope it's worth the potential consequences.

I'm delighted that our wise leaders like Doug Elliott and Brent Hawkes have come to the rescue with such sound guidance. Congratulations to all! Indeed, the City of Toronto acted contemptably by forcing PT to interpret its anti-discrimination laws according to its own directions. The the City do its own dirty work instead of threatening a community organization. I hope Toronto queers help vote these idiots out of office next election. Whatever anybody thinks of the Israel Palestine conflict, our community must vigilantly defend its free speech rights at all costs. They have been essential to our evolution as a movement. SAV: Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I don't agree with your base contention that Israel is an Apartheid state, but my eye is drawn to your observation that its ok to act against Israel because we have leverage and protesting never really accomplished anything. But all QuAIA is doing is protesting. Are they doing anything else? Within the context of the Parade...why is it ok to say "Boo Israel" but not "Boo Uganda".

The Pride Coalition for Free Speech provided a platform for the community to express diverse responses to a challenging decision. There were four themes: working within pride, protests at Pride, protests within pride events, and alternatives to pride. At no time did we ever support "destroying this year's festivities", nor did we call for a boycott.

I love Pride. I met my husband at Pride (Blockorama). I have worked and will continue to work to make Pride a truly inclusive event.

Micheal - who's saying it's not OK to say "Boo Uganda?" This canard that QuAIA must criticize all oppressive regimes in order to criticize Israel must end.

You write: "gosh it's funny that no one is carrying banners protesting Iranian homophobia," implying that QuAIA has to answer to this. It's nonsensical. QuAIA's focus is obviously Israel's policies with respect to Palestinians in the occupied territories, not Iranian homophobia. So why would QuAIA dilute their message vis a vis Israeli Apartheid? Why would they have to?

QuAIA's existence does not preclude other groups from forming and marching for other causes they feel passionate about.

I'm wondering why there is no scrutiny on QuAIA - could they not have chosen a more "positive" organization name - like Queers for a Free Palestine - in the sense they are for a particular objective, as opposed to against israeli apartheid, which is a term albeit debatable, nevertheless inflammatory.

There are ways to be constructive without necessarily being hateful. and I'm not sure pride parade is the place for this kind of political dialogue.

This is funny and completely IRONIC for the queer community on so many levels..

#1. The only pride festival that takes place in the middle east is in Israel, #2. Queer families are an integral part of Israeli society. #3. Dana International - need I say more!! (go look it up)

Like all queer couples to check out Tel Aviv pride festival, go to Israel, .. then try any other place in the middle east, then come back to me and tell me about freedom again. Couldn't read all of it, so if someone already covered this point, thanks!

why is it that whenever someone stands up and says "i am critical of Israel and what they are doing to Palestinians" you are automatically lumped with the Iran/sharia/hamas side? In response to Israeli Apartheid week at uni, zionists mobilized and created Against Islamo-facism week or something stupid like that...but again we see the pattern of "hmm, u are critical of israel, so you must be pro iran!". I am against israeli apartheid for all the reasons stated above and more, but that does not mean that i am "pro" some other state. This sort of black and white thinking is just a testament to how dumb some folks are. Especially as queers, we know that things are not black and white, for goodness sake, we are the communities that rejects normativity and recognizes that nothing and nobody can neatly fit in a box, sexually, politically or otherwise! (genderqueer theories/ people anyone?) It seems like israel's supporters see the world in terms of current international relations, which is "you are either with US or with THEM"...load of bullcrap. I am against homophobia everywhere, but when a state is trampling all over another group's human rights (and as we know, queers and poor women always bear the brunt of state oppression), then i am against that state, and i stand in solidarity with the oppressed peoples.

P.s- Hamas can have a charter, a constitution and a fricken system of law, but can they rule their people? No! they are occupied, live under apartheid, and labeled as terrorists (wrongly!) by powerful states around the world. How pointless it is to cite how they conduct politics, cuz the truth is, we are talking about how they WOULD conduct politics, cuz under occupation, they can't conduct much at all. Hopefully, when Palestine is free, Palestinian queers will rise up like we did in Toronto and in America with stonewall and assert themselves, cuz that's the only way change happens. FROM THE BOTTOM UP...and until then, i will also stand in solidarity with this future struggle (for queer rights in palestine), but until then, i stand in solidarity with Palestinian queers and the oppression they face under occupation, and therefore, am against israeli apartheid.

Ebi, your confusing the idea of queer rights, under Hamas being queer is a crime. (actually in the whole middle east except for Israel.)

Hamas is a terrorist organization... not sure what your trying to justify here. The only organization that limits/oppresses palestinians in Gaza is Hamas and its absolute fundamentalist vision... simply they are no fun.

Its great to see Canadians out there asking questions, getting involved but I think the aim here is misguided and just continues to propagate a double standard and lack of education concerning Israel. Ask yourself.. have you ever been to Israel?

The real issue concerning queer rights should be aimed at why being queer is a crime in every other middle east country other then Israel..

Calling yourselves "Queers against ****" doesn't make your group appropriate for Pride, which is a celebration and struggle for LGBT people. The Israel/Palestine conflict has nothing to do with LGBT rights, except in the broadest sense, being that there are gay people in those countries, just like every other country on earth. This groups is merely using Pride to gain attention for their opinion. While I agree with their position, I do not feel their message is appropriate for a LGBT celebration.

The punishment for homosexuality

What is the punishment for homosexuality? Is there any differentiation between the one who does it and the one to whom it is done?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The crime of homosexuality is one of the greatest of crimes, the worst of sins and the most abhorrent of deeds, and Allaah punished those who did it in a way that He did not punish other nations. It is indicative of violation of the fitrah, total misguidance, weak intellect and lack of religious commitment, and it is a sign of doom and deprivation of the mercy of Allaah. We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And (remember) Loot (Lot), when he said to his people: ‘Do you commit the worst sin such as none preceding you has committed in the ‘Aalameen (mankind and jinn)?

81. ‘Verily, you practise your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds (by committing great sins).’

82. And the answer of his people was only that they said: ‘Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!’

83. Then We saved him and his family, except his wife; she was of those who remained behind (in the torment).

84. And We rained down on them a rain (of stones). Then see what was the end of the Mujrimoon (criminals, polytheists and sinners)”

[al-A’raaf 7:80-84]

“Verily, by your life (O Muhammad), in their wild intoxication, they were wandering blindly.

73. So As‑Saihah (torment — awful cry) overtook them at the time of sunrise.

74. And We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down and rained down on them stones of baked clay.

75. Surely, in this are signs for those who see (or understand or learn the lessons from the Signs of Allaah).

76. And verily, they (the cities) were right on the highroad (from Makkah to Syria, i.e. the place where the Dead Sea is now)”

[al-Hijr 15:72-76]

al-Tirmidhi (1456), Abu Dawood (4462)and Ibn Maajah (2561) narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.”. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

Ahmad (2915) narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “May Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot, may Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot,” three times. This was classed as hasan by Shu’ayb al-Arna’oot in Tahqeeq al-Musnad.

The Sahaabah were unanimously agreed on the execution of homosexuals, but they differed as to how they were to be executed. Some of them were of the view that they should be burned with fire, which was the view of ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) and also of Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him), as we shall see below. And some of them thought that they should be thrown down from a high place then have stones thrown at them. This was the view of Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him).

Some of them thought that they should be stoned to death, which was narrated from both ‘Ali and Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them).

After the Sahaabah, the fuqaha’ differed concerning the matter. Some of them said that the homosexual should be executed no matter what his situation, whether he is married or not.

Some of them said that he should be punished in the same way as an adulterer, so he should be stoned if he is married and flogged if he is not married.

Some of them said that a severe punishment should be carried out on him, as the judge sees fit.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah be pleased with him) discussed this issue at length, and he mentioned the evidence and arguments of the fuqaha’, but he supported the first view. This is explained in his book al-Jawaab al-Kaafi’ li man sa’ala ‘an al-Dawa’ al-Shaafi, which he wrote to deal with this immoral action. We will quote some of what he said:

Because the evil consequences of homosexuality are among the worst of evil consequences, so its punishment is one of the most severe of punishments in this world and in the Hereafter.

The scholars differed as to whether it is to be punished more severely than zina, or whether the punishment for zina should be more severe, or whether the punishments should be the same. There are three points of view:

Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq, ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, Khaalid ibn al-Waleed, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Zubayr, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas, Maalik, Ishaaq ibn Raahawayh, Imam Ahmad according to the more sound of the two reports from him and al-Shaafa’i according to one of his opinions, were of the view that the punishment for homosexuality should be more severe than the punishment for zina, and the punishment is execution in all cases, whether the person is married or not.

Al-Shaafa’i, according to the well-known view of his madhhab, and Imam Ahmad according to the other report narrated from him, were of the view that the punishment for the homosexual should be the same as the punishment for the adulterer.

Imam Abu Haneefah was of the view that the punishment for the homosexual should be less severe than the punishment for the adulterer, and it is a punishment to be determined by the judge (ta’zeer).

Those who favoured the first view, who are the majority of the ummah – and more than one scholar narrated that there was consensus among the Sahaabah on this point – said that there is no sin that brings worse consequences than homosexuality, and they are second only to the evil consequences of kufr, and they may be worse than the consequences of murder, as we shall see below in sha Allaah.

They said: Allaah did not test anyone with this major sin before the people of Loot, and He punished them with a punishment that He did not send upon any other nation; He combined all kinds of punishment for them, such as destruction, turning their houses upside down, causing them to be swallowed up by the earth, sending stones down upon them from the sky, taking away their sight, punishing them and making their punishment ongoing, and wreaking vengeance upon them such as was not wrought upon any other nation. That was because of the greatness of the evil consequences of this crime which the earth can hardly bear if it is committed upon it, and the angels flee to the farthest reaches of heaven and earth if they witness it, lest the punishment be sent upon those who do it and they be stricken along with them. The earth cries out to its Lord, may He be blessed and exalted, and the mountains almost shift from their places.

Killing the one to whom it is done is better for him than committing this act with him, because if a man commits sodomy with another man, in effect he kills him in such a way that there is no hope of life after that, unlike murder where the victim is wronged and is a martyr. They said: the evidence for that (i.e., that the evil consequences of homosexuality are worse than those of murder) is the fact that in the case of murder, Allaah gives the next of kin the choice: if he wishes he may have him executed and if he wishes he may let him off, but He enjoined executing the homosexual as a hadd punishment, as the companions of the Messenger of Allaah were unanimously agreed, and as is clearly indicated by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and there is no evidence to the contrary; rather this is what his companions and the Rightly-Guided Caliphs (may Allaah be pleased with them all) did.

It is narrated from Khaalid ibn al-Waleed that he found a man among one of the Arab tribes with whom men would have intercourse as with a woman. He wrote to Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq consulted the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them). ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib had the strongest opinion of all of them, and he said: “No one did that but one of the nations, and you know what Allaah did to them. I think that he should be burned with fire.” So Abu Bakr wrote to Khaalid and he had him burned.

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas said: The highest point in the town should be found and the homosexual should be thrown head first from it, then stones should be thrown at him.

Ibn ‘Abbaas derived this hadd punishment from the punishment that Allaah sent upon the homosexuals of the people of Loot.

Ibn ‘Abbaas is the one who narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) the words: “Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.” This was narrated by the authors of al-Sunan and was classed as saheeh by Ibn Hibbaan and others. Imam Ahmad quoted this hadeeth as evidence, and its isnaad meets the conditions of al-Bukhaari.

They said: and it is narrated that he said: “May Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot, may Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot, may Allaah curse the one who does the action of the people of Loot,” and it is not narrated that he cursed the adulterer three times in one hadeeth. He cursed those who do a variety of major sins, but he did not curse any of them more than once, but he repeated the curse for the homosexual three times. The companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) agreed unanimously that the homosexual is to be executed, and none of them differed concerning that. Rather they differed as to the method of execution. Some people thought that this difference means that they disagreed about executing him, so they narrated it as a matter concerning which the Sahaabah differed, but it is a matter concerning which there was consensus among them, not a matter of difference.

And they said: Whoever ponders the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):

“And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a Faahishah (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits: a great sin), and an evil way (that leads one to hell unless Allaah Forgives him)”

[al-Isra’ 17:32]

and what He says about homosexuality (interpretation of the meaning):

“And (remember) Loot (Lot), when he said to his people: Do you commit the worst sin such as none preceding you has committed in the ‘Aalameen (mankind and jinn)?”

[al-A’raaf 7:80]

will see the difference between them. When Allaah mentioned zina, He described it as a “great sin” (faahishah – indefinite) among other great sins, but when He mentioned homosexuality, He called it “the worst sin” (al-faahishah – definite). This suggests that it contains all the essence of evil and sin.

End quote from al-Jawaab al-Kaafi (p. 260-263).

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: With regard to homosexuality, some of the scholars said that the hadd punishment for it is the same as the hadd punishment for zina, and it was said that it is less than that. But the correct view on which the Sahaabah were unanimously agreed is that both are to be killed, the active and the passive partners, whether they are married or not. The authors of al-Sunan narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.” And Abu Dawood narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas concerning the unmarried person who commits a homosexual act that he said: He is to be stoned. And something similar was narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him). The Sahaabah did not differ concerning the ruling that the homosexual is to be executed, but they differed concerning the methods. It was narrated from Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he is to be burned, and from others that he is to be executed.

It was narrated from some of them that a wall is to be knocked down on top of him until he dies beneath it.

And it is said that both should be detained in the foulest of places until they die.

It was narrated from some of them that he should be taken up to the highest place in the town and thrown down from it, to be followed with stones, as Allaah did to the people of Loot. This was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas. According to the other report, he is to be stoned. This was the view of the majority of the salaf. They said: because Allaah stoned the people of Loot, and stoning is prescribed for the zaani by analogy with the stoning of the homosexual. Both are to be stoned, whether they are free or slaves, or one of them is the slave of the other, if they have reached the age of puberty. If one of them has not reached the age of puberty, he is to be punished but not stoned, and none is to be stoned except one who has reached puberty. End quote from al-Siyaasah al-Shar’iyyah, p. 138.

Secondly:

The one to whom it is done is like the one who does it, because they both took part in the sin. So both are to be punished by execution, as it says in the hadeeth. But two exceptions may be made to that:

1 – One who is forced into sodomy by means of beating, death threats and the like. He is not subject to any hadd punishment.

It says in Sharh Muntaha al-Iraadaat (3/348): There is no hadd punishment if the one who has been sodomized is forced into it, such as if the one who did it overpowered him or threatened him with death or beating and the like. End quote.

2 – If the one to whom it was done is a minor and has not reached the age of puberty. There is no hadd punishment in this case, but he should be disciplined and punished in a way that will deter him from committing this crime, as stated above in the quotation from Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah.

Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated in al-Mughni (9/62) that there is no difference of opinion among the scholars concerning the fact that the hadd punishment should not be carried out on one who is insane or a boy who has not yet reached the age of puberty.

And Allaah knows best.

And if they who have received the scriptures had believed, it had surely been the better for them: there are believers among them, but the greater part of them are transgressors. They shall not hurt you, unless with a slight hurt; and if they fight against you, they shall turn their backs to you, and they shall not be helped. They are smitten with vileness wheresoever they are found; unless they obtain security by entering into a treaty with Allah, and a treaty with men; and they draw on themselves indignation from Allah, and they are afflicted with poverty. This they suffer, because they disbelieved the signs of Allah, and slew the prophets unjustly; this, because they were rebellious, and transgressed." (Al-Imran - verses 109-111).

Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it" (The Martyr, Imam Hassan al-Banna, of blessed memory).

"The Islamic world is on fire. Each of us should pour some water, no matter how little, to extinguish whatever one can without waiting for the others." (Sheikh Amjad al-Zahawi, of blessed memory).

In The Name Of The Most Merciful Allah

Introduction
Praise be unto Allah, to whom we resort for help, and whose forgiveness, guidance and support we seek; Allah bless the Prophet and grant him salvation, his companions and supporters, and to those who carried out his message and adopted his laws - everlasting prayers and salvation as long as the earth and heaven will last. Hereafter:

O People:
Out of the midst of troubles and the sea of suffering, out of the palpitations of faithful hearts and cleansed arms; out of the sense of duty, and in response to Allah's command, the call has gone out rallying people together and making them follow the ways of Allah, leading them to have determined will in order to fulfill their role in life, to overcome all obstacles, and surmount the difficulties on the way. Constant preparation has continued and so has the readiness to sacrifice life and all that is precious for the sake of Allah.

Thus it was that the nucleus (of the movement) was formed and started to pave its way through the tempestuous sea of hopes and expectations, of wishes and yearnings, of troubles and obstacles, of pain and challenges, both inside and outside.

When the idea was ripe, the seed grew and the plant struck root in the soil of reality, away from passing emotions, and hateful haste. The Islamic Resistance Movement emerged to carry out its role through striving for the sake of its Creator, its arms intertwined with those of all the fighters for the liberation of Palestine. The spirits of its fighters meet with the spirits of all the fighters who have sacrificed their lives on the soil of Palestine, ever since it was conquered by the companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, and until this day.

This Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS), clarifies its picture, reveals its identity, outlines its stand, explains its aims, speaks about its hopes, and calls for its support, adoption and joining its ranks. Our struggle against the Jews is very great and very serious. It needs all sincere efforts. It is a step that inevitably should be followed by other steps. The Movement is but one squadron that should be supported by more and more squadrons from this vast Arab and Islamic world, until the enemy is vanquished and Allah's victory is realised.

Thus we see them coming on the horizon "and you shall learn about it hereafter" "Allah hath written, Verily I will prevail, and my apostles: for Allah is strong and mighty." (The Dispute - verse 21).

"Say to them, This is my way: I invite you to Allah, by an evident demonstration; both I and he who followeth me; and, praise be unto Allah! I am not an idolator." (Joseph - verse 107).

Definition of the Movement

Ideological Starting-Points
Article One:

The Islamic Resistance Movement: The Movement's programme is Islam. From it, it draws its ideas, ways of thinking and understanding of the universe, life and man. It resorts to it for judgement in all its conduct, and it is inspired by it for guidance of its steps.

The Islamic Resistance Movement's Relation With the Moslem Brotherhood Group:
Article Two:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the wings of Moslem Brotherhood in Palestine. Moslem Brotherhood Movement is a universal organization which constitutes the largest Islamic movement in modern times. It is characterised by its deep understanding, accurate comprehension and its complete embrace of all Islamic concepts of all aspects of life, culture, creed, politics, economics, education, society, justice and judgement, the spreading of Islam, education, art, information, science of the occult and conversion to Islam.

Structure and Formation
Article Three:

The basic structure of the Islamic Resistance Movement consists of Moslems who have given their allegiance to Allah whom they truly worship, - "I have created the jinn and humans only for the purpose of worshipping" - who know their duty towards themselves, their families and country. In all that, they fear Allah and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors, so that they would rid the land and the people of their uncleanliness, vileness and evils.

"But we will oppose truth to vanity, and it shall confound the same; and behold, it shall vanish away." (Prophets - verse 18).

Article Four:

The Islamic Resistance Movement welcomes every Moslem who embraces its faith, ideology, follows its programme, keeps its secrets, and wants to belong to its ranks and carry out the duty. Allah will certainly reward such one.

Time and Place Extent of the Islamic Resistance Movement:
Article Five:

Time extent of the Islamic Resistance Movement: By adopting Islam as its way of life, the Movement goes back to the time of the birth of the Islamic message, of the righteous ancestor, for Allah is its target, the Prophet is its example and the Koran is its constitution. Its extent in place is anywhere that there are Moslems who embrace Islam as their way of life everywhere in the globe. This being so, it extends to the depth of the earth and reaches out to the heaven.

"Dost thou not see how Allah putteth forth a parable; representing a good word, as a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed in the earth, and whose branches reach unto heaven; which bringeth forth its fruit in all seasons, by the will of its Lord? Allah propoundeth parables unto men, that they may be instructed." (Abraham - verses 24-25).

Characteristics and Independence:
Article Six:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine, for under the wing of Islam followers of all religions can coexist in security and safety where their lives, possessions and rights are concerned. In the absence of Islam, strife will be rife, oppression spreads, evil prevails and schisms and wars will break out.

How excellent was the Moslem poet, Mohamed Ikbal, when he wrote:

"If faith is lost, there is no security and there is no life for him who does not adhere to religion. He who accepts life without religion, has taken annihilation as his companion for life."

The Universality of the Islamic Resistance Movement:
Article Seven:

As a result of the fact that those Moslems who adhere to the ways of the Islamic Resistance Movement spread all over the world, rally support for it and its stands, strive towards enhancing its struggle, the Movement is a universal one. It is well-equipped for that because of the clarity of its ideology, the nobility of its aim and the loftiness of its objectives.

On this basis, the Movement should be viewed and evaluated, and its role be recognised. He who denies its right, evades supporting it and turns a blind eye to facts, whether intentionally or unintentionally, would awaken to see that events have overtaken him and with no logic to justify his attitude. One should certainly learn from past examples.

The injustice of next-of-kin is harder to bear than the smite of the Indian sword.

"We have also sent down unto thee the book of the Koran with truth, confirming that scripture which was revealed before it; and preserving the same safe from corruption. Judge therefore between them according to that which Allah hath revealed; and follow not their desires, by swerving from the truth which hath come unto thee. Unto every of you have we given a law, and an open path; and if Allah had pleased, he had surely made you one people; but he hath thought it fit to give you different laws, that he might try you in that which he hath given you respectively. Therefore strive to excel each other in good works; unto Allah shall ye all return, and then will he declare unto you that concerning which ye have disagreed." (The Table, verse 48).

The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the links in the chain of the struggle against the Zionist invaders. It goes back to 1939, to the emergence of the martyr Izz al-Din al Kissam and his brethren the fighters, members of Moslem Brotherhood. It goes on to reach out and become one with another chain that includes the struggle of the Palestinians and Moslem Brotherhood in the 1948 war and the Jihad operations of the Moslem Brotherhood in 1968 and after.

Moreover, if the links have been distant from each other and if obstacles, placed by those who are the lackeys of Zionism in the way of the fighters obstructed the continuation of the struggle, the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

The Slogan of the Islamic Resistance Movement:
Article Eight:

Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.

Objectives

Incentives and Objectives:
Article Nine:

The Islamic Resistance Movement found itself at a time when Islam has disappeared from life. Thus rules shook, concepts were upset, values changed and evil people took control, oppression and darkness prevailed, cowards became like tigers: homelands were usurped, people were scattered and were caused to wander all over the world, the state of justice disappeared and the state of falsehood replaced it. Nothing remained in its right place. Thus, when Islam is absent from the arena, everything changes. From this state of affairs the incentives are drawn.

As for the objectives: They are the fighting against the false, defeating it and vanquishing it so that justice could prevail, homelands be retrieved and from its mosques would the voice of the mu'azen emerge declaring the establishment of the state of Islam, so that people and things would return each to their right places and Allah is our helper.

"...and if Allah had not prevented men, the one by the other, verily the earth had been corrupted: but Allah is beneficient towards his creatures." (The Cow - verse 251).

Article Ten:

As the Islamic Resistance Movement paves its way, it will back the oppressed and support the wronged with all its might. It will spare no effort to bring about justice and defeat injustice, in word and deed, in this place and everywhere it can reach and have influence therein.

Strategies and Methods

Strategies of the Islamic Resistance Movement: Palestine Is Islamic aqf:
Article Eleven:

The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that. Palestine is an Islamic Waqf land consecrated for Moslem generations until Judgement Day. This being so, who could claim to have the right to represent Moslem generations till Judgement Day?

This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Moslems have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Moslems consecrated these lands to Moslem generations till the Day of Judgement.

It happened like this: When the leaders of the Islamic armies conquered Syria and Iraq, they sent to the Caliph of the Moslems, Umar bin-el-Khatab, asking for his advice concerning the conquered land - whether they should divide it among the soldiers, or leave it for its owners, or what? After consultations and discussions between the Caliph of the Moslems, Omar bin-el-Khatab and companions of the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, it was decided that the land should be left with its owners who could benefit by its fruit. As for the real ownership of the land and the land itself, it should be consecrated for Moslem generations till Judgement Day. Those who are on the land, are there only to benefit from its fruit. This Waqf remains as long as earth and heaven remain. Any procedure in contradiction to Islamic Sharia, where Palestine is concerned, is null and void.

"Verily, this is a certain truth. Wherefore praise the name of thy Lord, the great Allah." (The Inevitable - verse 95).

Homeland and Nationalism from the Point of View of the Islamic Resistance Movement in Palestine:
Article Twelve:

Nationalism, from the point of view of the Islamic Resistance Movement, is part of the religious creed. Nothing in nationalism is more significant or deeper than in the case when an enemy should tread Moslem land. Resisting and quelling the enemy become the individual duty of every Moslem, male or female. A woman can go out to fight the enemy without her husband's permission, and so does the slave: without his master's permission.

Nothing of the sort is to be found in any other regime. This is an undisputed fact. If other nationalist movements are connected with materialistic, human or regional causes, nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement has all these elements as well as the more important elements that give it soul and life. It is connected to the source of spirit and the granter of life, hoisting in the sky of the homeland the heavenly banner that joins earth and heaven with a strong bond.

If Moses comes and throws his staff, both witch and magic are annulled.

"Now is the right direction manifestly distinguished from deceit: whoever therefore shall deny Tagut, and believe in Allah, he shall surely take hold with a strong handle, which shall not be broken; Allah is he who heareth and seeth." (The Cow - Verse 256).

Peaceful Solutions, Initiatives and International Conferences:
Article Thirteen:

Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Abusing any part of Palestine is abuse directed against part of religion. Nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its religion. Its members have been fed on that. For the sake of hoisting the banner of Allah over their homeland they fight. "Allah will be prominent, but most people do not know."

Now and then the call goes out for the convening of an international conference to look for ways of solving the (Palestinian) question. Some accept, others reject the idea, for this or other reason, with one stipulation or more for consent to convening the conference and participating in it. Knowing the parties constituting the conference, their past and present attitudes towards Moslem problems, the Islamic Resistance Movement does not consider these conferences capable of realising the demands, restoring the rights or doing justice to the oppressed. These conferences are only ways of setting the infidels in the land of the Moslems as arbitraters. When did the infidels do justice to the believers?

"But the Jews will not be pleased with thee, neither the Christians, until thou follow their religion; say, The direction of Allah is the true direction. And verily if thou follow their desires, after the knowledge which hath been given thee, thou shalt find no patron or protector against Allah." (The Cow - verse 120).

There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors. The Palestinian people know better than to consent to having their future, rights and fate toyed with. As in said in the honourable Hadith:

"The people of Syria are Allah's lash in His land. He wreaks His vengeance through them against whomsoever He wishes among His slaves It is unthinkable that those who are double-faced among them should prosper over the faithful. They will certainly die out of grief and desperation."

The Three Circles:
Article Fourteen:

The question of the liberation of Palestine is bound to three circles: the Palestinian circle, the Arab circle and the Islamic circle. Each of these circles has its role in the struggle against Zionism. Each has its duties, and it is a horrible mistake and a sign of deep ignorance to overlook any of these circles. Palestine is an Islamic land which has the first of the two kiblahs (direction to which Moslems turn in praying), the third of the holy (Islamic) sanctuaries, and the point of departure for Mohamed's midnight journey to the seven heavens (i.e. Jerusalem).

"Praise be unto him who transported his servant by night, from the sacred temple of Mecca to the farther temple of Jerusalem, the circuit of which we have blessed, that we might show him some of our signs; for Allah is he who heareth, and seeth." (The Night-Journey - verse 1).

Since this is the case, liberation of Palestine is then an individual duty for very Moslem wherever he may be. On this basis, the problem should be viewed. This should be realised by every Moslem.

The day the problem is dealt with on this basis, when the three circles mobilize their capabilities, the present state of affairs will change and the day of liberation will come nearer.

"Verily ye are stronger than they, by reason of the terror cast into their breasts from Allah. This, because they are not people of prudence." (The Emigration - verse 13).

The Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine is an Individual Duty:
Article Fifteen:

The day that enemies usurp part of Moslem land, Jihad becomes the individual duty of every Moslem. In face of the Jews' usurpation of Palestine, it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised. To do this requires the diffusion of Islamic consciousness among the masses, both on the regional, Arab and Islamic levels. It is necessary to instill the spirit of Jihad in the heart of the nation so that they would confront the enemies and join the ranks of the fighters.

It is necessary that scientists, educators and teachers, information and media people, as well as the educated masses, especially the youth and sheikhs of the Islamic movements, should take part in the operation of awakening (the masses). It is important that basic changes be made in the school curriculum, to cleanse it of the traces of ideological invasion that affected it as a result of the orientalists and missionaries who infiltrated the region following the defeat of the Crusaders at the hands of Salah el-Din (Saladin). The Crusaders realised that it was impossible to defeat the Moslems without first having ideological invasion pave the way by upsetting their thoughts, disfiguring their heritage and violating their ideals. Only then could they invade with soldiers. This, in its turn, paved the way for the imperialistic invasion that made Allenby declare on entering Jerusalem: "Only now have the Crusades ended." General Guru stood at Salah el-Din's grave and said: "We have returned, O Salah el-Din." Imperialism has helped towards the strengthening of ideological invasion, deepening, and still does, its roots. All this has paved the way towards the loss of Palestine.

It is necessary to instill in the minds of the Moslem generations that the Palestinian problem is a religious problem, and should be dealt with on this basis. Palestine contains Islamic holy sites. In it there is al- Aqsa Mosque which is bound to the great Mosque in Mecca in an inseparable bond as long as heaven and earth speak of Isra` (Mohammed's midnight journey to the seven heavens) and Mi'raj (Mohammed's ascension to the seven heavens from Jerusalem).

"The bond of one day for the sake of Allah is better than the world and whatever there is on it. The place of one's whip in Paradise is far better than the world and whatever there is on it. A worshipper's going and coming in the service of Allah is better than the world and whatever there is on it." (As related by al-Bukhari, Moslem, al-Tarmdhi and Ibn Maja).

"I swear by the holder of Mohammed's soul that I would like to invade and be killed for the sake of Allah, then invade and be killed, and then invade again and be killed." (As related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

The Education of the Generations:
Article Sixteen:

It is necessary to follow Islamic orientation in educating the Islamic generations in our region by teaching the religious duties, comprehensive study of the Koran, the study of the Prophet's Sunna (his sayings and doings), and learning about Islamic history and heritage from their authentic sources. This should be done by specialised and learned people, using a curriculum that would healthily form the thoughts and faith of the Moslem student. Side by side with this, a comprehensive study of the enemy, his human and financial capabilities, learning about his points of weakness and strength, and getting to know the forces supporting and helping him, should also be included. Also, it is important to be acquainted with the current events, to follow what is new and to study the analysis and commentaries made of these events. Planning for the present and future, studying every trend appearing, is a must so that the fighting Moslem would live knowing his aim, objective and his way in the midst of what is going on around him.

"O my son, verily every matter, whether good or bad, though it be the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and be hidden in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will bring the same to light; for Allah is clear-sighted and knowing. O my son, be constant at prayer, and command that which is just, and forbid that which is evil: and be patient under the afflictions which shall befall thee; for this is a duty absolutely incumbent on all men. Distort not thy face out of contempt to men, neither walk in the earth with insolence; for Allah loveth no arrogant, vain-glorious person." (Lokman - verses 16-18).

The Role of the Moslem Woman:
Article Seventeen:

The Moslem woman has a role no less important than that of the moslem man in the battle of liberation. She is the maker of men. Her role in guiding and educating the new generations is great. The enemies have realised the importance of her role. They consider that if they are able to direct and bring her up they way they wish, far from Islam, they would have won the battle. That is why you find them giving these attempts constant attention through information campaigns, films, and the school curriculum, using for that purpose their lackeys who are infiltrated through Zionist organizations under various names and shapes, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, espionage groups and others, which are all nothing more than cells of subversion and saboteurs. These organizations have ample resources that enable them to play their role in societies for the purpose of achieving the Zionist targets and to deepen the concepts that would serve the enemy. These organizations operate in the absence of Islam and its estrangement among its people. The Islamic peoples should perform their role in confronting the conspiracies of these saboteurs. The day Islam is in control of guiding the affairs of life, these organizations, hostile to humanity and Islam, will be obliterated.
Article Eighteen:

Woman in the home of the fighting family, whether she is a mother or a sister, plays the most important role in looking after the family, rearing the children and embuing them with moral values and thoughts derived from Islam. She has to teach them to perform the religious duties in preparation for the role of fighting awaiting them. That is why it is necessary to pay great attention to schools and the curriculum followed in educating Moslem girls, so that they would grow up to be good mothers, aware of their role in the battle of liberation.

She has to be of sufficient knowledge and understanding where the performance of housekeeping matters are concerned, because economy and avoidance of waste of the family budget, is one of the requirements for the ability to continue moving forward in the difficult conditions surrounding us. She should put before her eyes the fact that the money available to her is just like blood which should never flow except through the veins so that both children and grown-ups could continue to live.

"Verily, the Moslems of either sex, and the true believers of either sex, and the devout men, and the devout women, and the men of veracity, and the women of veracity, and the patient men, and the patient women, and the humble men, and the humble women, and the alms-givers of either sex who remember Allah frequently; for them hath Allah prepared forgiveness and a great reward." (The Confederates - verse 25).

The Role of Islamic Art in the Battle of Liberation:
Article Nineteen:

Art has regulations and measures by which it can be determined whether it is Islamic or pre-Islamic (Jahili) art. The issues of Islamic liberation are in need of Islamic art that would take the spirit high, without raising one side of human nature above the other, but rather raise all of them harmoniously an in equilibrium.

Man is a unique and wonderful creature, made out of a handful of clay and a breath from Allah. Islamic art addresses man on this basis, while pre-Islamic art addresses the body giving preference to the clay component in it.

The book, the article, the bulletin, the sermon, the thesis, the popular poem, the poetic ode, the song, the play and others, contain the characteristics of Islamic art, then these are among the requirements of ideological mobilization, renewed food for the journey and recreation for the soul. The road is long and suffering is plenty. The soul will be bored, but Islamic art renews the energies, resurrects the movement, arousing in them lofty meanings and proper conduct. "Nothing can improve the self if it is in retreat except shifting from one mood to another."

All this is utterly serious and no jest, for those who are fighters do not jest.

Social Mutual Responsibility:
Article Twenty:

Moslem society is a mutually responsible society. The Prophet, prayers and greetings be unto him, said: "Blessed are the generous, whether they were in town or on a journey, who have collected all that they had and shared it equally among themselves."

The Islamic spirit is what should prevail in every Moslem society. The society that confronts a vicious enemy which acts in a way similar to Nazism, making no differentiation between man and woman, between children and old people - such a society is entitled to this Islamic spirit. Our enemy relies on the methods of collective punishment. He has deprived people of their homeland and properties, pursued them in their places of exile and gathering, breaking bones, shooting at women, children and old people, with or without a reason. The enemy has opened detention camps where thousands and thousands of people are thrown and kept under sub-human conditions. Added to this, are the demolition of houses, rendering children orphans, meting cruel sentences against thousands of young people, and causing them to spend the best years of their lives in the dungeons of prisons.

In their Nazi treatment, the Jews made no exception for women or children. Their policy of striking fear in the heart is meant for all. They attack people where their breadwinning is concerned, extorting their money and threatening their honour. They deal with people as if they were the worst war criminals. Deportation from the homeland is a kind of murder.

To counter these deeds, it is necessary that social mutual responsibility should prevail among the people. The enemy should be faced by the people as a single body which if one member of it should complain, the rest of the body would respond by feeling the same pains.
Article Twenty-One:

Mutual social responsibility means extending assistance, financial or moral, to all those who are in need and joining in the execution of some of the work. Members of the Islamic Resistance Movement should consider the interests of the masses as their own personal interests. They must spare no effort in achieving and preserving them. They must prevent any foul play with the future of the upcoming generations and anything that could cause loss to society. The masses are part of them and they are part of the masses. Their strength is theirs, and their future is theirs. Members of the Islamic Resistance Movement should share the people's joy and grief, adopt the demands of the public and whatever means by which they could be realised. The day that such a spirit prevails, brotherliness would deepen, cooperation, sympathy and unity will be enhanced and the ranks will be solidified to confront the enemies.

Supportive Forces Behind the Enemy:
Article Twenty-Two:

For a long time, the enemies have been planning, skillfully and with precision, for the achievement of what they have attained. They took into consideration the causes affecting the current of events. They strived to amass great and substantive material wealth which they devoted to the realisation of their dream. With their money, they took control of the world media, news agencies, the press, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, and others. With their money they stirred revolutions in various parts of the world with the purpose of achieving their interests and reaping the fruit therein. They were behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others in different parts of the world for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests. With their money they were able to control imperialistic countries and instigate them to colonize many countries in order to enable them to exploit their resources and spread corruption there.

You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it.

"So often as they shall kindle a fire for war, Allah shall extinguish it; and they shall set their minds to act corruptly in the earth, but Allah loveth not the corrupt doers." (The Table - verse 64).

The imperialistic forces in the Capitalist West and Communist East, support the enemy with all their might, in money and in men. These forces take turns in doing that. The day Islam appears, the forces of infidelity would unite to challenge it, for the infidels are of one nation.

"O true believers, contract not an intimate friendship with any besides yourselves: they will not fail to corrupt you. They wish for that which may cause you to perish: their hatred hath already appeared from out of their mouths; but what their breasts conceal is yet more inveterate. We have already shown you signs of their ill will towards you, if ye understand." (The Family of Imran - verse 118).

It is not in vain that the verse is ended with Allah's words "if ye understand."

Our Attitudes Towards:

A. Islamic Movements:
Article Twenty-Three:

The Islamic Resistance Movement views other Islamic movements with respect and appreciation. If it were at variance with them on one point or opinion, it is in agreement with them on other points and understandings. It considers these movements, if they reveal good intentions and dedication to Allah, that they fall into the category of those who are trying hard since they act within the Islamic circle. Each active person has his share.

The Islamic Resistance Movement considers all these movements as a fund for itself. It prays to Allah for guidance and directions for all and it spares no effort to keep the banner of unity raised, ever striving for its realisation in accordance with the Koran and the Prophet's directives.

"And cleave all of you unto the covenant of Allah, and depart not from it, and remember the favour of Allah towards you: since ye were enemies, and he reconciled your hearts, and ye became companions and brethren by his favour: and ye were on the brink of a pit of fire, and he delivered you thence. Allah declareth unto you his signs, that ye may be directed." (The Family of Imran - Verse 102).

Article Twenty-Four:

The Islamic Resistance Movement does not allow slandering or speaking ill of individuals or groups, for the believer does not indulge in such malpractices. It is necessary to differentiate between this behaviour and the stands taken by certain individuals and groups. Whenever those stands are erroneous, the Islamic Resistance Movement preserves the right to expound the error and to warn against it. It will strive to show the right path and to judge the case in question with objectivity. Wise conduct is indeed the target of the believer who follows it wherever he discerns it.

"Allah loveth not the speaking ill of anyone in public, unless he who is injured call for assistance; and Allah heareth and knoweth: whether ye publish a good action, or conceal it, or forgive evil, verily Allah is gracious and powerful." (Women - verses 147-148).

B. Nationalist Movements in the Palestinian Arena:
Article Twenty-Five:

The Islamic Resistance Movement respects these movements and appreciates their circumstances and the conditions surrounding and affecting them. It encourages them as long as they do not give their allegiance to the Communist East or the Crusading West. It confirms to all those who are integrated in it, or sympathetic towards it, that the Islamic Resistance Movement is a fighting movement that has a moral and enlightened look of life and the way it should cooperate with the other (movements). It detests opportunism and desires only the good of people, individuals and groups alike. It does not seek material gains, personal fame, nor does it look for a reward from others. It works with its own resources and whatever is at its disposal "and prepare for them whatever force you can", for the fulfilment of the duty, and the earning of Allah's favour. It has no other desire than that.

The Movement assures all the nationalist trends operating in the Palestinian arena for the liberation of Palestine, that it is there for their support and assistance. It will never be more than that, both in words and deeds, now and in the future. It is there to bring together and not to divide, to preserve and not to squander, to unify and not to throw asunder. It evaluates every good word, sincere effort and good offices. It closes the door in the face of side disagreements and does not lend an ear to rumours and slanders, while at the same time fully realising the right for self-defence.

Anything contrary or contradictory to these trends, is a lie disseminated by enemies or their lackeys for the purpose of sowing confusion, disrupting the ranks and occupy them with side issues.

"O true believers, if a wicked man come unto you with a tale, inquire strictly into the truth thereof; lest ye hurt people through ignorance, and afterwards repent of what ye have done." (The Inner Apartments - verse 6).

Article Twenty-Six:

In viewing the Palestinian nationalist movements that give allegiance neither to the East nor the West, in this positive way, the Islamic Resistance Movement does not refrain from discussing new situations on the regional or international levels where the Palestinian question is concerned. It does that in such an objective manner revealing the extent of how much it is in harmony or contradiction with the national interests in the light of the Islamic point of view.

C. The Palestinian Liberation Organization:
Article Twenty-Seven:

The Palestinian Liberation Organization is the closest to the heart of the Islamic Resistance Movement. It contains the father and the brother, the next of kin and the friend. The Moslem does not estrange himself from his father, brother, next of kin or friend. Our homeland is one, our situation is one, our fate is one and the enemy is a joint enemy to all of us.

Because of the situations surrounding the formation of the Organization, of the ideological confusion prevailing in the Arab world as a result of the ideological invasion under whose influence the Arab world has fallen since the defeat of the Crusaders and which was, and still is, intensified through orientalists, missionaries and imperialists, the Organization adopted the idea of the secular state. And that it how we view it.

Secularism completely contradicts religious ideology. Attitudes, conduct and decisions stem from ideologies.

That is why, with all our appreciation for The Palestinian Liberation Organization - and what it can develop into - and without belittling its role in the Arab-Israeli conflict, we are unable to exchange the present or future Islamic Palestine with the secular idea. The Islamic nature of Palestine is part of our religion and whoever takes his religion lightly is a loser.

"Who will be adverse to the religion of Abraham, but he whose mind is infatuated? (The Cow - verse 130).

The day The Palestinian Liberation Organization adopts Islam as its way of life, we will become its soldiers, and fuel for its fire that will burn the enemies.

Until such a day, and we pray to Allah that it will be soon, the Islamic Resistance Movement's stand towards the PLO is that of the son towards his father, the brother towards his brother, and the relative to relative, suffers his pain and supports him in confronting the enemies, wishing him to be wise and well-guided.

"Stand by your brother, for he who is brotherless is like the fighter who goes to battle without arms. One's cousin is the wing one flies with - could the bird fly without wings?"

D. Arab and Islamic Countries:
Article Twenty-Eight:

The Zionist invasion is a vicious invasion. It does not refrain from resorting to all methods, using all evil and contemptible ways to achieve its end. It relies greatly in its infiltration and espionage operations on the secret organizations it gave rise to, such as the Freemasons, The Rotary and Lions clubs, and other sabotage groups. All these organizations, whether secret or open, work in the interest of Zionism and according to its instructions. They aim at undermining societies, destroying values, corrupting consciences, deteriorating character and annihilating Islam. It is behind the drug trade and alcoholism in all its kinds so as to facilitate its control and expansion.

Arab countries surrounding Israel are asked to open their borders before the fighters from among the Arab and Islamic nations so that they could consolidate their efforts with those of their Moslem brethren in Palestine.

As for the other Arab and Islamic countries, they are asked to facilitate the movement of the fighters from and to it, and this is the least thing they could do.

We should not forget to remind every Moslem that when the Jews conquered the Holy City in 1967, they stood on the threshold of the Aqsa Mosque and proclaimed that "Mohammed is dead, and his descendants are all women."

Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Moslem people. "May the cowards never sleep."

E. Nationalist and Religious Groupings, Institutions, Intellectuals, The Arab and Islamic World:

The Islamic Resistance Movement hopes that all these groupings will side with it in all spheres, would support it, adopt its stand and solidify its activities and moves, work towards rallying support for it so that the Islamic people will be a base and a stay for it, supplying it with strategic depth an all human material and informative spheres, in time and in place. This should be done through the convening of solidarity conferences, the issuing of explanatory bulletins, favourable articles and booklets, enlightening the masses regarding the Palestinian issue, clarifying what confronts it and the conspiracies woven around it. They should mobilize the Islamic nations, ideologically, educationally and culturally, so that these peoples would be equipped to perform their role in the decisive battle of liberation, just as they did when they vanquished the Crusaders and the Tatars and saved human civilization. Indeed, that is not difficult for Allah.

"Allah hath written, Verily I will prevail, and my apostles: for Allah is strong and mighty." (The Dispute - verse 21).

Article Thirty:

Writers, intellectuals, media people, orators, educaters and teachers, and all the various sectors in the Arab and Islamic world - all of them are called upon to perform their role, and to fulfill their duty, because of the ferocity of the Zionist offensive and the Zionist influence in many countries exercised through financial and media control, as well as the consequences that all this lead to in the greater part of the world.

Jihad is not confined to the carrying of arms and the confrontation of the enemy. The effective word, the good article, the useful book, support and solidarity - together with the presence of sincere purpose for the hoisting of Allah's banner higher and higher - all these are elements of the Jihad for Allah's sake.

"Whosoever mobilises a fighter for the sake of Allah is himself a fighter. Whosoever supports the relatives of a fighter, he himself is a fighter." (related by al-Bukhari, Moslem, Abu-Dawood and al-Tarmadhi).

F. Followers of Other Religions: The Islamic Resistance Movement Is A Humanistic Movement:
Article Thirty-One:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a humanistic movement. It takes care of human rights and is guided by Islamic tolerance when dealing with the followers of other religions. It does not antagonize anyone of them except if it is antagonized by it or stands in its way to hamper its moves and waste its efforts.

Under the wing of Islam, it is possible for the followers of the three religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism - to coexist in peace and quiet with each other. Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam. Past and present history are the best witness to that.

It is the duty of the followers of other religions to stop disputing the sovereignty of Islam in this region, because the day these followers should take over there will be nothing but carnage, displacement and terror. Everyone of them is at variance with his fellow-religionists, not to speak about followers of other religionists. Past and present history are full of examples to prove this fact.

"They will not fight against you in a body, except in fenced towns, or from behind walls. Their strength in war among themselves is great: thou thinkest them to be united; but their hearts are divided. This, because they are people who do not understand." (The Emigration - verse 14).

Islam confers upon everyone his legitimate rights. Islam prevents the incursion on other people's rights. The Zionist Nazi activities against our people will not last for long. "For the state of injustice lasts but one day, while the state of justice lasts till Doomsday."

"As to those who have not borne arms against you on account of religion, nor turned you out of your dwellings, Allah forbiddeth you not to deal kindly with them, and to behave justly towards them; for Allah loveth those who act justly." (The Tried - verse 8).

The Attempt to Isolate the Palestinian People:
Article Thirty-Two:

World Zionism, together with imperialistic powers, try through a studied plan and an intelligent strategy to remove one Arab state after another from the circle of struggle against Zionism, in order to have it finally face the Palestinian people only. Egypt was, to a great extent, removed from the circle of the struggle, through the treacherous Camp David Agreement. They are trying to draw other Arab countries into similar agreements and to bring them outside the circle of struggle.

The Islamic Resistance Movement calls on Arab and Islamic nations to take up the line of serious and persevering action to prevent the success of this horrendous plan, to warn the people of the danger eminating from leaving the circle of struggle against Zionism. Today it is Palestine, tomorrow it will be one country or another. The Zionist plan is limitless. After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying.

Leaving the circle of struggle with Zionism is high treason, and cursed be he who does that. "for whoso shall turn his back unto them on that day, unless he turneth aside to fight, or retreateth to another party of the faithful, shall draw on himself the indignation of Allah, and his abode shall be hell; an ill journey shall it be thither." (The Spoils - verse 16). There is no way out except by concentrating all powers and energies to face this Nazi, vicious Tatar invasion. The alternative is loss of one's country, the dispersion of citizens, the spread of vice on earth and the destruction of religious values. Let every person know that he is responsible before Allah, for "the doer of the slightest good deed is rewarded in like, and the does of the slightest evil deed is also rewarded in like."

The Islamic Resistance Movement consider itself to be the spearhead of the circle of struggle with world Zionism and a step on the road. The Movement adds its efforts to the efforts of all those who are active in the Palestinian arena. Arab and Islamic Peoples should augment by further steps on their part; Islamic groupings all over the Arab world should also do the same, since all of these are the best-equipped for the future role in the fight with the warmongering Jews.

"..and we have put enmity and hatred between them, until the day of resurrection. So often as they shall kindle a fire of war, Allah shall extinguish it; and they shall set their minds to act corruptly in the earth, but Allah loveth not the corrupt doers." (The Table - verse 64).

Article Thirty-Three:

The Islamic Resistance Movement, being based on the common coordinated and interdependent conceptions of the laws of the universe, and flowing in the stream of destiny in confronting and fighting the enemies in defence of the Moslems and Islamic civilization and sacred sites, the first among which is the Aqsa Mosque, urges the Arab and Islamic peoples, their governments, popular and official groupings, to fear Allah where their view of the Islamic Resistance Movement and their dealings with it are concerned. They should back and support it, as Allah wants them to, extending to it more and more funds till Allah's purpose is achieved when ranks will close up, fighters join other fighters and masses everywhere in the Islamic world will come forward in response to the call of duty while loudly proclaiming: Hail to Jihad. Their cry will reach the heavens and will go on being resounded until liberation is achieved, the invaders vanquished and Allah's victory comes about.

"And Allah will certainly assist him who shall be on his side: for Allah is strong and mighty." (The Pilgrimage - verse 40).

The Testimony of History

Across History in Confronting the Invaders:
Article Thirty-Four:

Palestine is the navel of the globe and the crossroad of the continents. Since the dawn of history, it has been the target of expansionists. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, had himself pointed to this fact in the noble Hadith in which he called on his honourable companion, Ma'adh ben-Jabal, saying: O Ma'ath, Allah throw open before you, when I am gone, Syria, from Al-Arish to the Euphrates. Its men, women and slaves will stay firmly there till the Day of Judgement. Whoever of you should choose one of the Syrian shores, or the Holy Land, he will be in constant struggle till the Day of Judgement."

Expansionists have more than once put their eye on Palestine which they attacked with their armies to fulfill their designs on it. Thus it was that the Crusaders came with their armies, bringing with them their creed and carrying their Cross. They were able to defeat the Moslems for a while, but the Moslems were able to retrieve the land only when they stood under the wing of their religious banner, united their word, hallowed the name of Allah and surged out fighting under the leadership of Salah ed-Din al-Ayyubi. They fought for almost twenty years and at the end the Crusaders were defeated and Palestine was liberated.

"Say unto those who believe not, Ye shall be overcome, and thrown together into hell; an unhappy couch it shall be." (The Family of Imran - verse 12).

This is the only way to liberate Palestine. There is no doubt about the testimony of history. It is one of the laws of the universe and one of the rules of existence. Nothing can overcome iron except iron. Their false futile creed can only be defeated by the righteous Islamic creed. A creed could not be fought except by a creed, and in the last analysis, victory is for the just, for justice is certainly victorious.

"Our word hath formerly been given unto our servants the apostles; that they should certainly be assisted against the infidels, and that our armies should surely be the conquerors." (Those Who Rank Themselves - verses 171-172).

Article Thirty-Five:

The Islamic Resistance Movement views seriously the defeat of the Crusaders at the hands of Salah ed-Din al-Ayyubi and the rescuing of Palestine from their hands, as well as the defeat of the Tatars at Ein Galot, breaking their power at the hands of Qataz and Al-Dhaher Bivers and saving the Arab world from the Tatar onslaught which aimed at the destruction of every meaning of human civilization. The Movement draws lessons and examples from all this. The present Zionist onslaught has also been preceded by Crusading raids from the West and other Tatar raids from the East. Just as the Moslems faced those raids and planned fighting and defeating them, they should be able to confront the Zionist invasion and defeat it. This is indeed no problem for the Almighty Allah, provided that the intentions are pure, the determination is true and that Moslems have benefited from past experiences, rid themselves of the effects of ideological invasion and followed the customs of their ancestors.

The Islamic Resistance Movement is Composed of Soldiers:
Article Thirty-Six:

While paving its way, the Islamic Resistance Movement, emphasizes time and again to all the sons of our people, to the Arab and Islamic nations, that it does not seek personal fame, material gain, or social prominence. It does not aim to compete against any one from among our people, or take his place. Nothing of the sort at all. It will not act against any of the sons of Moslems or those who are peaceful towards it from among non-Moslems, be they here or anywhere else. It will only serve as a support for all groupings and organizations operating against the Zionist enemy and its lackeys.

The Islamic Resistance Movement adopts Islam as its way of life. Islam is its creed and religion. Whoever takes Islam as his way of life, be it an organization, a grouping, a country or any other body, the Islamic Resistance Movement considers itself as their soldiers and nothing more.

We ask Allah to show us the right course, to make us an example to others and to judge between us and our people with truth. "O Lord, do thou judge between us and our nation with truth; for thou art the best judge." (Al Araf - Verse 89).

The last of our prayers will be praise to Allah, the Master of the Universe.

Dpes it bother anybody in the gay community that this decision to allow QUIA to march in the parade is essentially a slap in the face to the overwhelmingly Zionist Jewish community. I guess not. You'd rather allow an anti - Israel group to hijack the parade to score cheap political points, that have nothing to do with gay pride or gay rights, attack one of the few countries in the world, and the only one in the Middle East, where gays and lesbians have full rights, and alienate huge swatches of the pro - gay Jewish community not to mention gay and lesbian Jews. Of course, Pride will now lose city funding, corporate support and have hundreds if not thousands of straight supporters, like myself, and gay participants stay home instead of coming out to support gay rights. The parade may even cease to exist because of this egregious decision. Is that what you wanted? Shame on you.

I recently left a gay organization because it's leadership has a socialistic agenda, and anti-Israeli diatribe. Free Speech is great, propaganda is pure bull-shit as in this case. How many Arab countries have Pride Parades? Some have public hanging of Arab youths who are gay.The Palestinians were given statehood at the same time Israel was established by the United Nations in 1948. They rejected it, and along with many other Arab countries invaded Israel in hopes of driving the Jews into the sea. They lost that war, and 2 others. The Palestinians have been used as pawns, and kept in camps... not by Israel... but their leaders. And billions of dollars of funds for the camps have been stolen... again not by Israel... but their own leaders. Israel is a democracy that allows all their citizens, including Arabs to vote. As a Jew... I am proud of the contributions to mankind by Israel in medicine, and innovations in their peaceful hi-tech industry... and for constantly winning Nobel Prizes in many fields. Yet, they are constantly assaulted in the U.N. and the media by countries that depend on Arab Oil. This is not a Free Speech Victory... it is an anti- Israeli, anti- Jewish movement. Today it is Toronto... and it won't stop there. I think I heard this before, prior to WWll, when England's Prime Minister proclaimed "PEACE IN OUR TIMES!"

I didn't know, but i do know now, according to some of the remarks made here by pro israel (zionism) individuals', that most jewish people support zionism ( conquering all of middle east, and current turkey under the banner of israeli homeland) This clearly shows that the big plan for israel is to dehumanize muslims,(like they do now in GAZA) and legetimize thier expansion policies. Let the truth be known, that most muslims, have realized the game played here by Israel. The plan is to weaken and destroy every muslim country in the middle east(they were telling the world that Iraq has nukes) (Now they accuse Iran), and expand their zionism expansionist idea. The most interesting thing was the direct threat of Turkey a NATO ally by Israel recently. Also Israel threat every muslim country almost on a daily basis, be it Syria, Lebnon, Jordan, and like I said even Turkey. They have no shame. They have bought the US congress, and Canadian Parlimant. DON"T BOMB IRAN and listen to these crazy blood thirsty people. They are really crazy, and want a war, but don't want the fight.

I belong to a group that marched in solidarity in Edmonton with Toronto QuAIA. WTF and others, you can pretend that you have secret psychic knowledge of the motivations behind everyone involved, and what we supposedly *really* care about and what our political motives *really* are, but all you're doing is weaving a Glenn-Beck like conspiracy theory about everything being connected to Hamas (who I think, just for the record, suck -- but at least I know their history and have a three-dimensional picture of why people in Palestine support them).

You're spinning "secret connections" that reduces everyone to being motivated by a few lines in Hamas charter -- while the truth is right on the surface: People care about censorship of a valid political point of view because they know it will lead to loss of the meaning and roots of Pride. People know their history well enough to know that Pride's been a political event. I agree with the assessment that it was a "last straw" of people fed up with the corporatization of Pride.

As for the rest of you who are saying that QuAIA was out to steal all the attention from Pride or become its focus: you're being ridiculous. Any organization or community that blames the victim for causing all the tension is a dysfunctional one that needs to be analyzed in detail. QuAIA is not the cause of tensions: the City's censorship was. Aim your criticism at the right target, already.

I could go on about the ridiculous charges about groups like mine "singling out Israel," and about how dumb it is we supposedly shouldn't criticise Israel because it's "better" than Palestine on GLBTQ rights, but time's run short for the day...

I am a Queer Jewish Woman, who has been out for 25 years. I never felt the need to protest or stand with Queer Jews in solidarity. After reading all the anti Israeli rhetoric, I believe that the greater implications incites of the accusations flying against the Jewish State at pride has far greater implications for marginalizing and stigmatizing Jewish people and most Queer jewish people who have had alliances and marched in solidarity with all those excepted to march in the parade. While Free Speech is important Quaia's language that state Israeli is Terrorists and attempting to commit genocide against Palestian is both a lie and does incite hate to people who Identify with the Jewish state. I hope when the time comes that the QuAIA will remember that a lot of us who don't necessarily agree with your group's messaging nonetheless stood behind your right to make legal and political speech and thought that Pride was an entirely appropriate venue for it. That some people are offended is no excuse to shut down a political point of view that is not expressly promoting hatred. I am trying not to be too cynical here, but I have the sneaking suspicion that many of the people allied with QuAIA are not as supportive of free speech as they claim. It's not just about not censoring, it's about giving people the chance to take risks in public and speaking outside the bounds of what is considered politically acceptable at any given time. It's about allowing people to be critical of, for example, Islamism and the connection to terrorist activity, without claiming "Islamophobia" is at work. I hope that what we're seeing here is the birth of a new tolerance for differing points of view. I hope that this new love of free expression is genuine, and not entirely self-serving. Excuse me if I'll wait to see the results before deciding that that is the way it has worked out over the long run. The recent past is hardly conducive to optimism.

They essentially are acting on their own, and their proposal does little to address the issues of those of us who have gathered and expressed our distress and concern and have worked together to develop true community solutions to this situation. It certainly doesn't recognize the systemic and structural problems at Pride Toronto that allowed the 'Israeli apartheid' issue to arise, and it doesn't recognize that the Blockorama issue, the Trans participation issue, the Dyke March/events location issue, the larger sponsorship and funding issues and the by-law/mission/mandate/PR agency/strategic direction issues that are all intertwined."

Wow. Where to begin. Yes, how dare some well meaning people give of their own time to help a solution be arrived at when the warring parties couldn't seem to find one on their own. How dare they.

As far as your laundry list of other 'issues', well, the party line the last two months was that it was about free speech. Free speech! Not about where fucking Blockorama should be located! That is an issue, but it is not this issue. Goal achieved.

"Structural issues?" What fucking structural issues? Be fucking specific!!!!!!!!!!! People giving of their time and making the best decisions they could with what was available to them?

If you want the rest of your critical theory fugue state to be realized, then for the love of fucking ass-humping take Pride over and show us how it is done.

Pride made some incredibly stupid decisions lately, however, they've come around. If you think you can do better, then run. And solve your silly list of non-issues separate from this. Because if you represent the QuAIA people, and I think you do, then it was never really about free speech. It was about a hard-line agenda that I'm guessing most Pride participants don't support. It's a whiny 'we are so oppressed' victimization cant that should have been shut down long ago. No one is keeping you from taking over Pride and just doing it. Have your boring little p.c. socialist dream world and see who shows up.

Whiny cunt.

I defnitely think that the Kindle is very impressive. I bought one the other day, and I have been reading more than I have in years! . I now subscribe to a newspaper and two magazines, plus I have several books I downloaded, some were even free!
