One for Toronto's queer history books

It was a huge day yesterday for Toronto’s gay and lesbian communities. Just after sunrise, this year’s international grand marshals withdrew from this year's pride celebration. Then more than 20 past- and present-honoured dykes, grand marshals and Pride-award recipients renounced their accolades, leaving statuettes on Pride Toronto’s (PT) doorstep.

Elle Flanders assures police that Pride Toronto's building is perfectly safe.

No one was at Pride’s offices to receive the accolades, the doors were locked tight, but by then all mention of the international grand marshals had been wiped from pridetoronto.com and PT had issued a press release to rebut the refusnik movement. Check it out here.

A Toronto police officer told me that PT contacted them the night before. “They are concerned about the building,” he told me.

PT marketing and communications manager Michael Ain was the only Pride staffer I spotted at The 519. It was good to see him there at least. But Pride Toronto management and other staff were clearly both well aware of and avoiding the goings-on.

PT executive director Tracey Sandilands was seen later in the morning gathering up the award statuettes and accompanying certificate of shame from PT’s front porch. (The word is there's a picture out there somewhere – lay it on me! matt.mills@xtra.ca)

"If we had not made this decision [to censor ‘Israeli Apartheid’], Pride would not have been able to take place,” she told the CBC. “We would have had to cancel the 2010 festival, close our doors and file for bankruptcy.”

That, of course, has been PT’s somewhat implausible line from the beginning. Read about it all here and here.

Then it was standing-room only last night as hundreds packed the auditorium at The 519 for a community meeting. It seemed a fitting inauguration for The 519’s freshly minted renovation project.

The auditorium was packed at The 519.

Xtra streamed the meeting live on its website and will add a written account later today. Watch a chunk of the meeting below (we had some trouble with our internet connection, so the first chunk is missing - our apologies):

It was a marathon session, but the energy in the room didn’t waver.

At the same time, Ward 27 city councillor Kyle Rae’s retirement party was held a few blocks south.

Rae has been pretty silent on this, except to rattle sabres against anyone attempting to defy the "Israeli apartheid" ban.

Sandilands tweeted that she was, "At a reception celebrating the career of Councillor Kyle Rae. So many well-known ppl from far & wide here to (cont) http://tl.gd/1o2kgc" And she posted on her facebook profile:

At the end of the night those left behind at The 519, 50 to 75 people, marched to Buddies in Bad Times Theatre for an afterparty. It was the second rousing march of the day.

After the meeting at The 519, a crowd marched to Buddies.

 More to follow soon.

I wonder what George Smitherman's opinion is in this matter. It is a city election year afterall. Xtra should interview him.

Sorry I was in a a pre-planned trip to Montreal. Sounds like things went pretty well yesterday but cannot find out what was decided--if anything--at the community meeting. I had sent to several of the leaders--including the moderator--an idea re an Alternative march to the Pride T march (a la SOS in NYC for Stonewall's 25th in 1994 which I was at with Harry Hay and many others). It is indeed ironic that Rae's party coincided with this important community meeting.

Pride Toronto has loose it way and it is time the community demand that they all be dismissed from their post and elect a new board.....

If you are a perform at Pride you can not speak your mind you can not show your support for any one for Major or name a group you support...you are just to perform and keep your mouth shut...this is Not What Pride Stands For...

We are Proud Gays in Canada.... who speak for those that can not .... we use our voices to have bring attentions it things we are proud of and thing we find to be wrong....

I was proud...and very proud to see how we have come to be at the meeting and at the protest on Monday...there will be more to come in the coming days and weeks...WE WILL TAKE BACK OUR PRIDE....

PRIDE is not FOR SALE...If you are a CORPORATIONS or a COMPANY that wishes to support pride we welcome you BUT YOU WILL NOT HAVE A SAY ON WHO CAN AND CAN NOT BE IN THE EVENT...you know as well as we do that your SIGNS your BANNERS help get your name out into the city and into the community...it would cost you millions in advertising dollars to get you name out the way it is done so at pride.....And SHAME on TD Bank calling PRIDE GROUPS MEMBERS and asking where they stood on the ban you have no right to do that and shame on your for doing it....

I Ask you all to please stand up with community and take back our pride....and to have a new PRIDE TORONTO BOARD ELECTED...

We also need to come up with a PRIDE BILL OF RIGHTS ON WHAT PRIDE WILL STAND FOR AND WHAT ROLES CORPORATION AND COMPANIES CAN HAVE IN PRIDE WE HAVE TO HAVE THIS GUIDE LINE IN PLACE AND IN PLACE NOW....THIS HAS BEEN LOST IN THE PASS YEARS AND NOW CORPORATIONS AND COMPANIES ARE TELLING US HOW PRIDE WILL BE PUT ON THIS IS WRONG AND MUST BE CHANGED...

Wrong, DJ. QuAIA is banned from Pride because they are anti-semitic. Pride costs money and those who fund it don't want to be associated with inciting hatred toward Israel, Israelis and Jews. Stop shouting, crazypants.

I used to steer clear of Israeli/Palestinian politics because the whole thing seemed so hopelessly complicated. There are victims and perpetrators on both side. But because this touched two issues I care deeply about, namely free speech and threats from 2 levels of government and corporate sponsors to our Gay Pride Parade, I decided to do a little research into the situation in Gaza. I recommend everyone do the same, and maybe you will see why there are so many human rights groups calling for an end to the blockade: Amnesty International, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, Jews for Peace, the UN and yes, QuAIA.

I don't believe it's anti-semitic to criticize the policies of the government of Israel, anymore than its anti-Canadian to criticize our government. This is one of the fundamental rights of democracy, something which people have given their lives to protect.

True anti-semitism is deplorable. And so is the treatment of the Palestinians.

QuAIA is a queer group that is promoting a political cause. They have every right to be in the parade.

@Piers the only reason companies give money to pride is for advertising and nothing more and that is as far as their rights go to having a say.....they could not care less about Gay Right all they want to show is on their corporate book that they give to pride to make them look good and trust me I know I worked for IBM and GE and they could not give a rats ass about Gays and Gays Rights....and Pride was built on freedom....freedom to be gay the freedom of speech...they freedom to be with who we wanted to be with and about or sexually... and all that want to march or come to be part of it is welcome....Sorry if you think that was shouting....because if you think that is shouting just wait you have seen nothing yet...If the Jews do not like or want QuAIA in the parade that is tough they do not get a say how can and can not be in the march...but they are more then welcome to come and march in it if they want....I am not welcome in the Jews Community so I really do not care what they think but I am a bigger man then them and will welcome them into our community any time....when pride was founded it was founded for all it was not set up for companies to buy their say to do what they want ....trust me one company leaves and there is another that will come in and take it place.....

here are some meaning for you:

SPONSOR:
To sponsor something is to support an event, activity, person, or organization financially or through the provision of products or services.

No where in that meaning does it say to own to buy to have your say......

TO BUY:
To acquire the ownership of (property) by giving an accepted price or consideration therefor, or by agreeing to do so; to acquire by the payment of a price or value; to purchase.

To my knowledge we never put Our Pride up For Sale....

Last but not least if you really really really believe IBM and GE and VIA and Bell Canada and The Toronto Police and the Canada Army and TTC and The City of Toronto and so on really really care about Gay rights guess again....the only reason they are in the Dyke March or the Pride Parade or have a booth set up is to have a face out there....nothing more nothing less....

Yesterday, all six mayoral candidates were asked about Pride on CP24. All 6, including George Smitherman, said that Pride Toronto did the right thing in banning the words Israeli Apartheid.

Peter, so what? .... what is your point again... oh wait... again, you make no sense, ever... Harper hates gays... do you want to tell us why he must be right? After all, he is a politician. Could someone who couldn´t care less for gays and lesbians take a stand against us because of their fanatical christian constituency... think Peter, think... come on, you can do it.

As a gay man that was right there from the first Pride event to the initial parades, I find this so very sad that we have sold ourselves out to corporate sponsors.
I totally agree that we have to get our Gay/Lesbian,Bisexual/Transgendered Pride back.
This board has to go. Why do we have 2 board directors that are sponsors who are voting board members. They are not even of our community but were dictated to the board as a condition of sponsorship.
We have to unite and take our pride back.

Ignore Peter. Seriously. All you'll get are illogical and unsubstantiated arguments.

Case in point: His citing of the six mayoral candidates, above. That's a logical fallacy -- an appeal to authority.
