One Million Moms refuse to stay silent

BY ADAM M GLEN - All right, One Million Moms. We get it. You don't like us.

The radical rightwing group, which attempted to have comedian Ellen DeGeneres removed as the spokeswoman for JCPenney, is going after the Day of Silence, an event that will be held in Canadian and American schools on Friday, April 20. The event, aimed at drawing attention to anti-queer bullying in schools, has been held since 1996. One Million Moms (who may have a few less moms than they say they have) is encouraging parents to keep their kids home from school. If you want to know why, check out this super reasonable and totally non-bigoted PDF from the walkout's official website.

Some friends of OMM known as the Florida Family Association, who you may remember from our previous coverage over EA Games' support for BioWare's queer content, have been hard at work attempting to ruin Gay Day at Disney World.

The banner the Florida Family Association is flying over Orlando.

The event, held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, since 1991, attracts hundreds of thousands of queer couples and their families to the park every June. FFA will be flying a plane with a banner over Orlando to warn families not to take their kids to the park that day. Though the event is not sanctioned by Disney, the corporation has never taken any issue with it and treats it just like any other day.

Pink ties and galactic love

BY ADAM GLEN - Hope you got all that Santorum out of your system. Now that Rick has dropped out of the 2012 Republican presidential race, Mitt Romney has all but snagged the nomination. The guys and gals at Gawker decided to celebrate by releasing a clip from a Fox News interview in which Romney uses a mock "gay guy voice" when asked if he wants a pink tie.

Romney has a mixed history on queer issues. While he signed a pledge last August saying he would support a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman, he has opposed such measures in the past. Despite his flip-flopping, he has proven more queer-friendly than his previous competition.

On to a follow-up to a Roundup from earlier this week: EA Games, publisher of the popular role-playing games Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, has refused to remove an option that allows players to enter same-sex relationships in both games. A protest organized by the Florida Family Association resulted in "thousands of letters" being sent to EA. Despite this, EA has insisted that the Entertainment Software Rating Board gave both games appropriate ratings.

After all, if you've spent all day saving the universe, don't you deserve to climb into bed with whom you want?

Self-phobic homophobes in Oshawa and abroad

By Adam Glen - Though Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has made it clear he's fine being ridiculously homophobic, he may want to calm it down, with the release of new study results.

The study was carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Rochester and the University of California, in the US, and the University of Essex in the UK. Its main finding is that homophobia is more pronounced in individuals with an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex. The study is the first to link sexual orientation and the effect parenting has on the formation of homophobic behaviour, ranging from intense fear of homosexuals to outright violence against them.

The final results of the study will be published in the April 2012 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Speaking of homophobes, the queer community has turned its eyes toward a homophobic and poorly written headline from the Oshawa/Durham Central. The paper featured an editorial criticizing Oshawa Councillor Amy England for dressing as Bruno Mars at a drag show hosted by a local PFLAG chapter. Quotes in the article describe the event as "a freak convention." The author complains that "heterosexual taxpayers" could not hold an event in a strip club without being called perverts. Publisher Joe Ingino has defended the rant, saying he's simply reflecting the views of his readers.
