New campaign targets The Toronto Sun's advertisers

BY ANDREA HOUSTON - Perhaps the best way to fight the Toronto Sun is to hit them where it hurts: their income.

Toronto activist Justin Beach thinks so. That's why he has launched Operation Sunset, a new campaign aimed at shining some light on the Sun's role in helping spread hate.

Beach is asking people to send a message to The Sun by not supporting its advertisers. Consider shopping at stores other than The Bay or HMV this holiday season. Go to Mr. Sub instead of Subway.

Over the next few weeks, Beach will be periodically publishing the names of Sun advertisers on the website. The first batch includes The Bay, Porter Airlines, Subway, HMV and Ontario Energy Group.

"Advertising is where The Sun earns its money," he says. "Also, The Sun supports the Ford administration that is trying to close libraries, parks, reduce service on the TTC and lay-off public workers.

"It seems irresponsible for Toronto companies to continue to support a paper that wants to seriously damage the standard of living."

The campaign is targeted at the Toronto Sun, which Beach describes as a "a right-wing propaganda machine," as opposed to the Sun News Network, which everyone everywhere describes as a right-wing propaganda machine.

Toronto Sun publisher Mike Power could not be reached for comment.

The Sun pulled out of the Ontario Press Council in July. At the time, John Honderich — a former publisher of the Star and the current chair of Torstar's board of directors — called the decision “most disturbing,” adding “Sun Media will abide by its own standards of journalism and not be accountable to anyone.”

In October, the Toronto Sun refused to apologize for running an ad in its Oct 2 edition that activists have called transphobic.

The ad, from the Institute for Canadian Values, is a slightly modified version of a full-page ad that ran in the National Post on Sept 24 and Sept 28. Following a social media outcry, the National Post issued an apology and stated that the proceeds from the ad sale would be donated to a queer charitable organization.

A version of the advertisement subsequently ran for weeks on Sun TV.

Then this month, Chris Bolton, the chair of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) announced he plans to file a formal complaint against Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party and Sun Media over homophobic campaign flyers that were distributed during the provincial election and a transphobic television ad campaign that aired for three weeks following it.

Media companies should realize there are consequences for what they do, says Beach. "It's important for people to realize that where you choose to do business is a form of democracy."

McGuinty's empty words of support for bullied gay youth

Excuse me while I contain my rage.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty tweeted this afternoon: "Let's all stand up against bullying and support our gay children. They have the right to a safe and happy life!

That tweet sounds lovely, but his words are hollow. Back in April, McGuinty cancelled a sex ed curriculum update that would have helped fight homophobia in Ontario's schools.

McGuinty had a chance to make a difference for queer youth in Ontario schools, and he failed miserably by caving to a few social conservative bigots like Charles McVety.

Queers are still pissed at McGuinty's decision to shelve the new sex ed curriculum. At last night's Toronto vigil for lives lost due to homophobic and transphobic bullying, hundreds marched from Church and Wellesley streets to Queen's Park. Activist Anna Willats gave a passionate speech about how McGuinty has massively failed queer youth. Watch a clip of her speech below (starting at 1:20 seconds) and read an excerpt:

***

ACTIVIST ANNA WILLATS, QUEEN'S PARK, OCT 6, 2010:

You’ll remember that Dalton McGuinty did one of his maybe not-so rare flip-flops on the issue of a new curriculum that was going to be introduced here. Do you remember that? Do you remember the moral panic that was in the media based on a few complaints from very influential evangelical Christians?

Those complaints prompted the premier to remove a tool that would have helped lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans youth.

These deaths that are happening are of course individual, unique stories, just like the ones we heard earlier, but they happen in a system. They happen in a context that is transphobic, homophobic and heterosexist.

If that curriculum... is put into place, our kids have a safe space at school.

In that decision, our premier decided to take that away from kids, to save votes with evangelical Christians, frankly, and other fundamentalists. That is a shame!

This comes in an education system that had the guidance counsellors, the hall monitors, the child-abuse workers, the social workers ripped out of it for 10 years by the Mike Harris Tories. And that is followed up with one little light: some progressive curriculum that would allow kids to talk about sex, talk about sexuality, talk about gender, talk about themselves in relation to all that. They took that away and they’ve replaced it with nothing yet.

We have an election coming up… and you need to be asking the premier and anyone who’s running when they’re going to put that curriculum back in our schools so that our young people can be affirmed.... So that my kids and your kids and the youth among us and the youth of the future have a more positive space to go to....

It is 2000-and-fucking-10 folks… it would be funny if it wasn’t so pitiful.

McGuinty still has a chance to change things. Let him know that you want to see Ontario's 2010 sex ed plan implemented NOW:

Toronto vigil draws hundreds

They came from all facets of queer life, hundreds of people gathered at the corner of Church and Wellesley streets tonight to stand vigil against homophobic violence.

Watch our video report:

Starting shortly before 8pm, the crowd soon spilled into the roadway. After a series of moving speeches, well documented by mainstream media, the crowd devoted a moment of silence to gay and lesbian people who have died because of homophobia.

The crowd then marched peacefully to Queen's Park, chanting “End the silence on homophobic violence.” Police stopped traffic.

It happened after a series of recent reports of suicides among young gay people in Canada and the US, including those of Jeanine Blanchette and Christine Dube, who died this past weekend in Orangeville.
