Daily Roundup: Music to my ears

As the same-sex marriage debate heats up in Washington DC, New York blogger Joe Jervis posted some hilariously awful footage of one particular Bible-thumping loon and said:

"Yes, she is horrible, but I don't know when I've laughed so hard. Somebody please remix this lady."

Well, I'm no DJ, Joe, but -- with huge, huge apologies to the Pet Shop Boys -- here's mine (turn on the annotations for the amazing Gallery Guy):

Yeah, I'd best leave the mixing up to the professionals, like Canadian electropop group Dragonette, who recently squeezed into a little CBC Radio studio to perform a number:

In other music news, out American Idol Adam Lambert just revealed the cover art for his forthcoming CD:

He's certainly getting a reaction. The Queerty blog yelled, "We love you Adam, but no. NO. NO!"  Entertainment Weekly said, "it’s a little more, um, out there than the pensive-yet-ultimately-benign images we’ve come to expect from Idol runners-up."

Many others have pointed out the obvious glam links to early David Bowie and/or Michael Jackson but let's face it -- your average Wal-Mart shopper is going to see only this:

But hey, it's no more outré than the great gay T-shirts American Apparel is now selling.  Lambert deserves a big pat on the back for putting himself out there like that -- hopefully his sales won't be as disastrous as the movie that will carry his theme song:

And finally, no music Roundup would be complete without this ridiculous number from The Brave and the Bold, the new Batman cartoon that, in last week's (musical!) episode, featured Neil Patrick Harris as the villain.  For geeks and show queens alike, it's purrrr joy!

People for the Ethical Treatment of Activists

In reporting on lesbian outrage over some moronic TV ads from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, NYC blogger Joe.My.God. made a funny:

Q:  How many semi-naked PETA protesters does it take to change a light bulb?
A:  Zero. Semi-naked PETA protesters have never changed anything.

Hey-yo!  It's easy to make fun of PETA but still, you gotta love them -- no matter how badly they embarrass themselves ("Sea kittens???" The fuck?), they just keep plugging away, standing up for the animals.

We still need that kind of tenacity in the gay rights movement -- sure we've achieved a lot in Canada but witch-hunts can pop up with ease. Meanwhile, our American friends face a well-oiled machine of hatred that organizes big marches against gay rights, compares us to murderers and will never ever compromise.  As for the rest of the world? Don't get me started!

But tenacity wins:  just ask Ken and Jack Saunders-Waller or Washington Post reporter Jose Antonio Vargas, whose feature on gay bloggers highlighted the awesome Pam Spaulding. Her "House Blend" blog is required daily reading -- she's smart, she's personable and she just keeps plugging away, standing up for queers-of-colour in particular, the human race in general.

PETA could take a few lessons from Pam, even as I'm forced to admit that their latest tactic has certainly caught my eye.  Jamie Bamber?  I thought the idea was to make me not want meat?  Hey-yo!

Filthy gorgeous!

Granted, Monday morning might be a teensy bit late for these to be really useful (did someone say "nooner?") but the legendary Lady Bunny has helpfully posted The Rules of the Baths. Among the gems:

"It is pointless to consider why guys who won't even talk to you at the bars are so eager to suck your cock at the baths."

Meanwhile, her fellow New York blogger Joe Jervis offers this debate on the topic from San Francisco:

The big tragic story this weekend was the death of John Travolta's 16-year-old son. There's been a lot of speculation around it and for once, I'm kind of speechless. Whether or not Travolta is gay or the nanny legit or the boy autistic or Scientology lethally stupid, the whole saga is just unpleasant.

Across the sea, this French sports interview caused a stir...until it was revealed to be a "Borat" style hoax. Still fun though -- watch the background carefully:

And just after England's BBC One scored nearly 12 million viewers for the latest episode of sci-fi favourite "Doctor Who" on Christmas day, they announced this weekend that little-known 26-year-old actor Matt Smith will take over the role in 2010, making him the youngest of the 11 actors to have played the Doctor since 1963:

Bad enough that my childhood hero will now be a full decade younger than me but I'm finding the new guy strangely hot.  Kind of a "Twilight" thing, no?  He was my role model and now I feel dirty inside!
