Daily Roundup: "Jane, you ignorant slut..."

What, again with this woman???

I know, I know, and I am publicly vowing that this will the Final Carrie Prejean Posting Ever (wellllll....unless she goes and locks two gay parents in a Wal-Mart or something).  Now that her "religious discrimination" lawsuit against her former employers is being dropped after the discovery of her sex tape, I would've been happy to see her drift off into obscurity.

But along comes a feminist blog that suddenly, bafflingly defends the beauty queen who campaigns against the rights of gay people because that's just how she was raised by arguing that Ms. Prejean is the tragic victim of puritanism:

"Prejean is being shamed for being a sexual being in a world in which chastity in women is highly prized.  We may claim to be a sexually liberated but the disciplining and slut shaming of women’s bodies proves quite the opposite...Is it really a good idea for the GLBT community to chastise someone’s sexual behaviour when that is exactly what heterosexism does to create homosexuality as 'other'?"

No. No. No.

Carrie Prejean is not being shamed for her sex tape or even her "Christian values" -- it's because she's a liar.  That's it.  She used her ridiculous platform at a national beauty contest to disparage millions of gay people, then went on to become a poster girl for the fearmongering National Organization for Marriage. I know that the blogger behind Womanist Musings is on our side here but did she not see this video from September?

This was the true display of immorality.  It's not about Carrie Prejean making a sex tape.  Everyone should make a sex tape*. Sex tapes are fun! (Just don't be surprised when they somehow end up on the internet.)  No, the reason there's something about Carrie is that she merrily became the spokesmodel for people who attack queer people for our sexuality even while she was lying to them about her own.  It's not about being a slut -- sluts are great! -- it's about being a liar and a bigot.

While conservatives panic at the thought that gay rights will usher in some nightmare of widespread sexual depravity, we have always known that that's not the case.  Sexual liberation simply means more honesty about the kind of sex people like Ms. Prejean are having already

I mean, for pity's sake, Alfred Kinsey taught us that in the 1950's!

Daily Roundup: Well, I'm speechless

Some days, there's just not much more I can add. For example...

-- "opposite marriage" spokesbimbo Carrie Prejean, beacon of Christian morality, getting caught out with making a sex tapeTHAT makes me believe in God.

-- the amazing US activist Pam Spaulding's video wrap-up of more testimony from the marriage equality hearings in Washington (the ones that produced this disco ditty).  I'm gonna have nightmares this weekend about the anus lady.

-- in the aftermath of gay rights voted down in Maine, we get an amusing rant from the Justice of the Peace Office, a typically solid defense from Dan Savage and this flashback from the mid-90s "Dana Carvey Show" in which he's joined by Stephen Colbert in a skit that now seems a bit too real:

-- this lengthy commercial for laundry soap in Denmark is meant as the ultimate eye candy for the ladies -- but we like it too!

-- and finally, the creators of the wondrous Planet Unicorn (heyyy!) are back with....well...you'll just have to see it for yourself:

What can I say to that other than have a great weekend?  We'll see you Monday!

Two great things that go WRONG together

Today, a disturbing number of things that just don't belong together, like:

-- Carrie Prejean and books: the former beauty queen has scored a big paycheque for her story of how the gays have silenced her.  Irony is dead.

-- John Barrowman and race cars: while appearing on "Fifth Gear" this week, the "Torchwood" star forgot that while his character is immortal, he is not!

-- MC Hammer and Twitter: 140 characters makes one for every minute of his career.

-- Chris Brown and a teleprompter: he may be trying to beat criminal charges like he did Rhianna but blankly reading canned speeches? "Take You Down," indeed:

-- "Harry Potter" and voodoo: Geraldo Rivera on FOX News mixes the new movie, Christian exorcisms, "True Blood" and transphobia into a big gumbo of crazy:

-- Henry Louis Gates Jr. and, apparently, his own house: the renowned Harvard professor was arrested on a SAHWB (Sitting at Home While Black)!

-- Rick Astley and Nirvana:  here's where I give up though -- if loving this is wrong, I don't want to be right!

I just love your new outfit

Man, I wander off for one day and look what I miss!

Carrie Prejean is finally fired for spending more time being Miss Anti-Gay instead of Miss California (but now free to choose between same unemployment and opposite unemployment), while American Idol's Adam Lambert comes out on the cover of Rolling Stone (not as gay -- we all knew that already -- but as an ophiophile)!

Lambert's not the only one making questionable fashion choices, however -- check out the fetching ensemble that got this man arrested:

That's right -- this man is going to jail because he makes people feel uncomfortable!  If that were, you know, actual law, Pat Roberton should be on death row for creeping us all out with his latest theory on homosexuality:

For the record, my big gay self went to a Catholic school, where I was beaten by nuns, yet I developed no attraction to lesbian penguins.  So while Robertson gets fitted for a straight jacket, Dan Savage explains why his views are so offensive...to Christians.

While we're talking jailhouse fashion, check out this first photo of Mickey Rourke as the Russian mafia bad guy Whiplash in next summer's 'Iron Man 2' -- will he fight Robert Downey Jr. or invite him along to a fetish party?

Other guy dressing in something he's totally unsuited for?  Umm....me.  I've been squeezing myself into spandex for next month's Friends for Life Bike Rally. I and, more importantly, the Toronto PWA Foundation could really use your help.  After all, look at what I'm going through!

But the best change of clothes is no clothes, like in this French TV ad bringing back everyone's favourite naked pole vaulter:

And of course, Ryan Reynolds, who -- in a naked attempt to bring you back -- I'll talk about tomorrow!

Till then, however, I'll be wearing black to mark the passing of Rick Bébout, one of Toronto's finest gay journalists and historians. Gerald Hannon will be writing a remembrance for Xtra and here's a terrific interview he did with Bébout about his queer philosophy:

Unshockable

Most days here at the Roundup, I point out surprises either delightful or exasperating.  But looking at today's news, I didn't even bat an eyelash:

-- Sam Wurzelbacher, the pseudonymous Republican icon "Joe the Plumber," is a homophobe! Who could've seen that coming?  Joe says he has gay friends (where do the bigots get these people?) but "I wouldn't have them anywhere near my children." Well, of course "Joe" wouldn't -- gay men would only teach the kids that there's more to life than snaking septic pipes and who'd run the family plumbing business then?

-- David Ogden Stiers says, "Hello gays!" Gays say, "Who?"

-- in a new poll, 67% of "feistier" Canadians say, "Canada should follow its own interests even if it leads to conflict with other nations." So it's a majority but not an overwhelming majority that might seem impolite.

-- evil gossipmongers TMZ tried to trick the Lynn-Crosbie-approved Adam Lambert into coming out. Oh, those 'American Idol' contestants are so wily:

-- turns out anti-gay beauty queen Carrie Prejean is a dirty, dirty ho. Between that and feuding with Perez Hilton, I'm almost starting to like her! (Hey, I guess that's a surprise)

-- and finally, Hugh Jackman says he's straight and I believe him. If he wasn't, how could he resist the adorably flirty Nate Berkus on Oprah's show?
